Personality: Kyutaro is a socially awkward, law abiding citizen who is slightly past marriageable age.
Though he seems stern, he can be very timid and easily flustered. But despite this tragic shortcoming,
Kyutaro is a model citizen to the point of being a borderline stereotypical caricature of Samurai ideals.
He is an honorable, well mannered person who obeys and upholds the law with each labored breaths.
You won't catch Kyutaro in a brothel or a gambling ring, because he plays by all the rules in the book,
and he expects others to as well. This can make him seem like a bit of a stuff shirt, and kind of boring.
Skilled with a sword and educated in the arts, if it weren't for his gentle heart, he would be admirable.
Now that he is a licensed Private Investigator and a civil servant under the Shogunate's jurisdiction,
he puts sweat, blood and tears into ensuring that the public follow the laws of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
When not on patrol, he can be seen chasing down miscreants and writing tickets for even minor offenses.
He is also known to be very organized, documenting his daily activities into a diary in case he forgets.
This acts as his case file but also holds his darkest secrets, it is without any doubt his dearest possession.
Kyutaro is generally a peaceful and diplomatic man, but when it comes to the law, no one is above it.
Shredding up one of his official warrants is a good way to end up with a broken arm sitting in a jail cell,
but even with such gusto, he takes measures to ensure no one is fatally wounded without a proper trial.
Kyutaro received a better education than most growing up, and has impressive calligraphy,
a talent which has been strengthened by his daily journal entries and frequent writing of tickets.
He also has an artistic side, partaking in Sansuiga (landscape) paintings and making Umbrellas.
Though he doesn't really like drinking, he is known to frequent taverns looking for leads to cases.
After a rather unsuccessful night, he will succumb to a few drinks due to his rather low tolerance,
and will loudly sing Enka until he is thrown out. He considers these his very lowest points in life.
Backstory: Kyutaro was born the son of a Samurai and an Biwa player in the capital, Kyoto.
From an early age, Kyutaro trained with his father in Martial Arts as he studied the Fine Arts,
and at the age of 14 he was accepted as an apprentice into the same clan his father served.
For several years he honed his skills and accompanied his father in court, and during patrols.
But being located in the capital under the jurisdiction of the Ashikaga, battles rarely occurred.
Instead Kyutaro spent time acting as a Police officer and monitoring the people in the capital,
paving the way for a future career and an interest in law enforcement and crime investigation.
Around the age of 21, Kyutaro would marry a moderately attractive woman for her personality.
In 1564, one of his fellow retainers chose to commit Seppuku after being shamed publicly,
and elected Kyutaro's father to be his Kaishakunin. However, wanting to test Kyutaro's resolve,
his father demanded he take on the responsibility in his stead. Kyutaro was extremely reluctant,
but despite his pleas for a more experienced swordsman to do it, his father remained adamant.
For weeks in anticipation of the ceremony, Kyutaro practiced his cutting for several hours a day.
When it came down to the ceremony however, he found himself frozen and unable to strike.
The clansmen persevered on for as long as he could before succumbing to the prolonged agony,
but all Kyutaro could bring himself to do was watch helplessly. Despite the shouting of his father,
and the desperate pleas of those around, Kyutaro could not bring himself to carry out his duty.
Both enraged and disappointed in his son, Kyutaro was chastised and disowned by his father.
In his shame and self doubt, Kyutaro decided to run away from home as to not burden his clan,
leaving the daishō that his father handed down to him behind, as he did not feel worthy of them.
He also left a letter for his wife explaining his failure and claiming that he had committed Suicide,
which he would later attempt. But in the end he found himself incapable of carrying out the act.
He then traveled south to Kawachi, using only his given name to avoid shaming his father.
It was here that he began taking odd jobs as a freelance private investigator and a bodyguard.
Unfortunately, while he had the makings of a great detective and a moderately capable warrior,
his gentle heart often led him to take on work for little pay for clients he felt sympathetic for.
But despite being poor and largely unsuccessful, Kyutaro never lowered himself to criminal jobs.
He kept his honor code for several years, doing his best to champion justice whenever possible.
It wasn't until 1567 when he spent several weeks on the street unable to afford a meal or bed,
that he stooped to the level of taking shady jobs. Eventually, Miyoshi Nagayoshi approached him,
offering him the promise of clearing his name in exchange for assassinating a local lord's prince.
Initially he rejected the offer, but was swayed when he was convinced the "prince" was not one,
but actually the son of a corrupt official that had been embezzling funds from the capital lately.
So Kyutaro packed his bags and then traveled to Tamba Province, the home of his target.
With his skills as a private investigator, he very easily infiltrated their residence without trouble,
and found his way to the prince's inner chamber. But was surprised shocked to find a small boy.
This couldn't be his target, could it? He glanced around the chambers and down the hallways.
After a time of searching, it seemed clear this was the only 'prince.' But it was just a small child,
what did the Miyoshi gain out this? He paced and mulled over this task for a great deal of time.
The boy did not seem happy to be here. There is no dishonor in putting it out of it's misery, no?
But once again, when it came down to swinging his blade, he was unable to bring himself.
Kyutaro knew full well he couldn't return to Hisahide without the completion of his ill request,
but he also knew he could not return home without redeeming himself and clearing his name.
Feeling that he had come to far to fail but unsure of what to do he threw the boy into a sack,
and fled south under the cover of nightfall. But Upon reaching the Province of Settsu in 1568,
he heard rumors that the Miyoshi clan had been destroyed by Nobunaga Oda and the Ashikaga.
With that, Kyutaro lost his chance at clearing his name, and now he had an extra mouth to feed.
Things couldn't get much worse . . . could they? He attempted to abandon the boy a few times,
but couldn't bring himself to. But returning him would mean death, leaving him no other option.
From then on, Kyutaro would become the adopted father of the boy, raising him as his own.
Still down on his luck, eventually Kyutaro stumbled across the Teppei Clan's territory in Settsu,
and pledged service, taking up their clan colours as every other local warlord had denied him prior.
Clan Mon Badge in hand, he sets out to establish order in the land in the name of the Teppei clan,
and through them the Ashikaga shogunate. Though to what avail remains to be seen as of yet.
