Description
Raven+ Magik
Rakhil Rasputin was the much younger sister of X-Patrol member Ferro Man (Andriy Rasputin). One of X-Patrol's early missions was to rescue Rakhil (along with many others) from the Church of Sapien Liberty (a neo-nazi anti-alien, anti-metamutant... just about anti anything organization). After the rescue, the injured and exhausted X-Patrol hid out on a recently risen island that seemed to be from lost Atlantis. As the group stayed there however, stranger and stranger things seemed to happen, and it became evident that the island had demonic origins, not Atlantean (or at the least was part of an Atlantean demon-worshipping splinter group). The meta-mutant Rakhil had her powers jumpstarted, and she was teleporting around the island on her stepping disks, unaware of the danger and just enjoying her new freedom and time with her brother.
Her stepping disks, however linked her to limbo. Unknown to either Andriy (and certainly unknown to Rakhil) the young Rasputin girl had been conceived during a demonic ceremony, that was an attempt to gain favor with the demon Belasgon. Although the ceremony seemed to fail, the young unborn Rakhil had been touched by Belasgon and her powers were from that source, not a normal meta-mutant origin. So during one of Rakhil's joyful skips on her disk, her last joyful activity for a very long time, Rakhil disappeared to Limbo where Belasgon seeked to claim her soul. He intended to use her soul (instead of his own) to open the gate to release the Elder Gods from their prison, and fulfill an obligation he had made as a human in the 13th century. He began to remove her soul, bit by bit and form them into gems for the ritual. Before he could complete the process and steal her soul completely, Rakhil was rescued by a much older version of X-Patrol member Elasti-Girl. In Limbo, time moves differently, much differently. The X-Patrol had travelled through Rakhil’s stepping disks to find her, and became separated, lost, and changed by the very nature of the realm. Rakhil had looked up to young Ghostcat (Enya Pryde), who had a crush on her brother. Enya babysat Rakhil on the strange island and tried her best to keep Rakhil from being too afraid. But in Limbo, Ghostcat became feral and a fierce warrior, though she still felt loyalty to Rakhil and helped Elasti-Girl raise the young girl for many years.
Rakhil’s time in Limbo hardened her, as she saw Elasti-Girl and Ghostcat have to kill even more warped versions of their friends. Rakhil learned magic from both women, as they had learned a bit of the art in their time in Limbo. Rakhil, though, touched as she was by Belasgon, was much more adept. During her time in Limbo, Belasgon catches and loses Rakhil, each time he has her he forces her to manifest her soul gem. After years, both Elasti-Girl and Ghostcat and other members of X-Patrol that had followed her were killed and Rakhil is in Belasgon’s possession. She tries to create life, an acorn, as Elasti-Girl had tried to teach her, but cannot, her soul is not pure enough. Then she realizes that she cannot create an acorn, but she draws on her energy and her soul gems and creates a weapon she believes she can use to defeat Belasgon… her soulsword. Attaking Belasgon with her sword is the first time she manifests her Demonchylde persona and physical appearance. She also learns during this battle that she can release her soulform from the gem to aid her in battle.
Thinking she had defeated Belasgon, Rakhil (calling herself Nightingale, a nickname from when she was younger) finds her way back to Earth. As time moves differently, she finds herself on the island, just after she had left, giving the X-Patrol no time or cause to chase her into Limbo. The demonic realm still changed her, her experiences still existed and she was still seven years older, but this group of X-Patrol members were still alive and unaltered.
A little while later, Nightingale discovered that Belasgon was near succeeding in bringing the Elder Gods to Earth (even though she thought she had killed him… again, time in Limbo is not to be trusted). She attempted to gather the X-Patrol to fight them, or other heroes, the Justice League Avengers or JLX. But time was running out, and she ended up settling on who she could get. Just as Lucas “Snapper” Jones had formed the Justice League Avengers while trying to reach someone else to fight an alien invasion, Nightingale managed to gather a group of teen heroes, some former sidekicks of the JLA, to join her. The group managed to thwart Belasgon’s schemes, and decided to stay together since they had much in common. Calling themselves the Teen Avengers in honor of many of their mentors being JLA members.
Meta Backstory: So, here is Nightingale. She’s shown here in her Demonchylde form, and yes the Teen Avengers will have to fight her at times when Belasgon’s influence is too strong. Putting together my Teen Avengers which were inspired by my original drawing of Deathstroke the Reaper and wanting to do a Judas Contract type “story” with him. I knew that the team would have to be built around the New Teen Titans from that storyline. I decided most likely to amalgam them with Young Avengers, but then I wanted to do Jade from Infinity Inc to continue my Green Patriotic hero legacy. So my rule was this: members of the Teen Avengers had to have ONE part that was either Young Avenger or New Teen Titans (Wolfman/Perez era). So, Nightingale is Raven. The original idea was to combine her with Wiccan, but Wiccan had ties to Speed and Hulkling I didn’t want to deal with in this background… A friend suggested Magik and it was just too perfect.
I also swiped art by Andrew Kuder from Death of X #4 and manipulated it to fit in the background, depicting Limbo. All of the rest of the art on this pic is mine, but credit to the background goes to Mr. Kuder (and the inker and colorist from that issue too).
Amalgams in this story
X-Patrol (X-Force or other X-teams and Doom Patrol. Although Ferro Man and Elasti-Girl are in this team, it is not the same as X-Patrol from amalgam canon)
Ferro Man (Ferro Lad + Colossus Andriy is a more Russian sounding name based on Andrew Nolan, secret identity of Ferro Lad)
Church of Sapien Liberty (Church of Humanity/Sapien League/Friends of Humanity/Purifiers et. al. + Sons of Liberty)
Nightingale/Rakhil Rasputin (Rachel Roth/Raven + Illyana Rasputin/Magik… Rakhil seems to be a more Russian version of Rachel)
Belasgon (Belasco +Trigon)
Elasti-Girl (Jan Van Dyne +Elasti-Girl… perhaps Domino as well just as in canon)
Ghostcat (Phase from L.E.G.I.O.N. and Kitty Pryde)
Demonchylde (Magik’s Darkchild persona and Raven’s Trigon possessed persona)
Lucas “Snapper” Jones (Snapper Carr + Rick Jones)
