Description One of the crossing diamonds that once made up Blakeslee JCT. These represented a major maintenance issue for track maint crews. Eliminating them means less money spent maintaining this junction and speeds through this junction can be increased slightly.

Why are those so hard to maintain then?

8 corners that get a regular pounding whenever a train rolls by. 16 if both lines are active. This entire assembly needs to be pulled up in order to properly repair the cumulative damage of thousands of wheels beating on the corners. With a turnout, only 1 real point of regular impact at the frog and it manages to absorb that pretty well.

Also, until a few months ago, Blakeslee JCT featured 2 of these things. It featured at least 4 back when this location hosted 3 different rail lines.

Reminds me of a Masonic emblem. Interesting.
