I never done something like this...so this was the only thing I knew. And it's a hard one, to paint water, but at the same time not to cover your fish. My fish are obviously hovering over water.
They can swim, they can fly...maybe even walk Multitasking beings

I must say that I didn't have problem drawing and painting them. I was actually very surprised. I used photo references and the patterns on the fish looked so good, but I wasn't quite sure I will be able to achieve this look.
I had more trouble with adding, painting water. I didn't know the way to suggest it, without looking strange, unrealistic. I liked the fish so much, that I didn't want to risk the painting by painting water over them.
So a girl has to do what she has to do (think of safety first )

I had one reference picture for each one of them. I had some hard time finding some quality ones. The "faces" of the fishes were always so blurred. I wanted to have diverse patterns. There are so many types of koi fishes...so little paper space, but so many koi fish to choose from

Yes, there really are a lot of different types of koi. They could fill up quite a few paintings!
I've tried my hand at painting them before, but I'm much better at pencilwork than painting. I really like your style.
