Description Taken at Cleveland Botanical Garden - 2011 Orchid Mania Show

As part of the CBG Photography Club I was afforded the ability to come in two hours before the show officially opened and be able to bring in my tripod and I took advantage of every second of it! It was nice being one of maybe a dozen people in the building with all the lovely orchids to view, appreciate and photograph.

One of the things that amazes me about orchids is the diversity in sizes and shapes. You have your star-shaped orchids, the ladys slipper, the butterfly shape, the ones that are long and thin, these curly ones and then about a dozen others. This was a smaller one in butterscotch tones that was tucked into a large pot out in the middle of the pathway. When composing this shot, I had in mind that I wanted the lower right part of the frame to be filled with the green leaves to help keep some of the negative space and draw the focus back to these beautiful flowers.

While I have seen what they considered a "micro orchid" with blooms the size of an eraser, the world largest orchid is believed to be Grammatophyllum speciosum, reaching approximately 10 feet in height on average. It can weigh up to a ton and produce 10,000 blooms on a mature plant. Wow!

I think this is my favorite of the photos that you've posted so far from this session. I love the curly little flowers, and how the depth of field is such that one flower can be in both out-of-focus areas and the in-focus area.

Aw thanks!! I like the curly edges on these flowers too--I had to decide if I wanted to keep the DoF short or not but I liked the effect that I could get the center in focus but other parts of the same flower wouldn't be. Glad you liked it!
