We had to do this as an assignment in my art class last semester. It's actually really easy. You just pick a few colors (you can start with five if you're worried), and then take their relative values and replace them to the relative values of the actual drawing. So for example, using the colors yellow, red, and orange. Yellow is a bright value, and would be used for things like highlights. Red is a dark value, and would be used for things like shading. Orange is a value between yellow and red, so it would be used as an "in between color" like base skin tone. Using five colors means you would have a shading color, half-shade, middle ground, light, high light. You can also adjust saturation and such on the color to change where you want to use it. a.k.a, use a yellow but make it darker to use for shading, and then use a red but make it brighter/less saturated for a highlight. Hope that helps

IK I love that character paradox! All the characters and the art style are so cute and chibi-like...and then you actually watch the show itself and realize there's this huge theme of dark comedy all around it. This is the only show I know that actually goes through so much effort to put stains and dirty spots all over the background objects, just to emphasize how disgusting the place is even WITH that amazingly dark and gloomy color scheme!
