OMG, I Love this piece. Beautiful work. I could not remember who it was that I talked to about the bead patterns and magazines until now lol. I can see why one of your necklaces would be chose to be in beadwork magazine. '
I used to do some jewelry making but nothing this detailed. I did start out with seed beads... before the swarovski crystal craze. Mostly I made earrings and bracelets with seed beads and the tube beads. I always wanted to try embroidery and beads together.
I eventually got into the crystals and bali silver but then it seemed like everyone was getting into it and the prices started going up. Because I have lupus sle and it gives me arthritis symptoms I had to give alot of that type of stuff up. I was just starting to try the wire bending stuff but could not do it. Had to give up the jewelry and crocheting... which was something I loved to do late at night while watching tv lol.. cuz it kept my hands busy and kept me from snacking or smoking. I have a lot of crystals and silver that I can not bring myself to part with. My husband tells me to sell it on ebay or at least get melt down prices for the silver. But I would like to get back into it, and I know that I will never have enough money to replace the stuff I have. I also have a ton of misc fun type beads and non silver findings... I am writing a letter in comments lol... How long does it take you to make something like this? Have you ever tried doing beadwork like this on a dress? You could work some fairy Godmother magic on a simple black dress, shoes and hand bag. And make a TON of money, doing something you enjoy.

Thank you so very much Its not actually a necklace chosen to be in the magazine, a piece I submitted won their contest to receive a kit of beads to create a necklace that they will then feature

I love the swarovski crystals, it seems like every other thing in magazines and tutorials are created with them or soley from them which makes me sad because I simply cannot see paying oh, about $7 for some 10 crystals... and the project calls for about 200. Insane. Most of my projects are created entirely from seed beads, cheap and easy to come by (on sale often too) its too bad though that no store in WV sells the japanese ones that are so much nicer because their shapes are all the same. Oh well. I want to say though, that should you decide to try your hand at bead emboidery, one of the cheapest, yet nice looking, things to use for cabachons are those wonderful flat backed fish tank rocks (as I call them).

Anyways... you asked me how long it took to make this piece, well, I started on it in the middle of October, sewed around that big geode slice, then finished it around November 26th, I put it away for a while, then worked on it every day for about two weeks or more. The moss stitch took FOREVER, I don't know that I'll ever do it again. I love it though I don't know what I'll ever wear it with. My favorite thing to make though is hair barretts, I can make one of those in two days or less, there are a few on display in my gallery, just type in barrette if you're interested in looking.

As it happens, I have thought about doing some simple beading on a dress, I got this beautiful somewhat shiny but plain moss green brides maids dress at the Goodwill for $2.50.... it looks like it needs some beading

Oh for sure, you should try beading that dress.. Beading like that you could make even a plain dress look like a million dollars. Their used to be a brand of seed beads here in Michigan, they were called Gick beads. Thats why I love them, because the shape/sizes were all the same or very close.. Every now and again you would get a few junk beads. When I would make earrings and use the bugles for my base row, it would really irk me when I got any that were off in size. IMO it would make whatever I was making look cheap. I hear you about the crystal prices, hell even the base metal findings are getting expensive now. So I know that my colletion of swarovski crystals and pearls and my bali silver is all stuff that I would never be able to re stock my collection. Way more money then I have lol. Bought all of that back when I was working. I am going to check out your barretts! I have a bunch of those fish tank rocks lol. I use them for my little pond/birdbath. I was always going to try making a dragonfly with them. I have seen where people do the wire bending and they use those stones.

Not at all, just thousands of tiny little seed beads and some even smaller, attatched with the moss stitch mostly.
