Actually, when I look at Shia, I really don't view her as a very tragic character LOL Sure she's not the most fortunate and she's been through a lot of loss and heartache, but she's able to move past it because her vision is so focused and fixated on the future ahead. I had fun playing around with drawing a manga page again! Eventually I'll get there, and I'll learn all the magicalness Manga Studios has to offer me LOL

Q: When and how does Ayla (Shia’s mother) die?
A: Ayla dies when Shia is between the age of 14/15ish, a few months after Sinbad conquers Valefor’s dungeon. Shia leaves Sinbad with his newly found comrades and returns with Drakon back to Parthevia. Ayla, during this time, was captured and arrested by the Parthevian Empire for treason and for assisting in the escape of Sinbad (she provided the boat that both Sinbad and Shia escaped in). When Shia returns, she finds her mother on display in the village square, and in a reckless, angry and not-thought out attempt, Shia decides to try to save her mom. Shia coincidentally (and conveniently) finds her mother’s sword in her house, and in the dead of night, Shia strikes. Shia is able to strike down a few guards, but overestimated her ability and gets surrounded and outnumbered. Ayla is freed and steps in, basically slaughtering the remaining threats with her sword whip, revealing a side of her mother Shia had never seen before. In the end, Ayla collapses into Shia’s arms and tells Shia that she’s past the point of no return, seeing that she was put on the brink of death through torture and starvation over the course of weeks. Despite her condition, the first thing Ayla does is criticize Shia about not taking care of her complexion, and they spend the rest of the night catching up with each other. Shia shares with her mother the adventures she had with Sinbad and Ayla expresses how she is glad that Shia has expanded her horizons and is happy that she entrusted Shia to Badr’s family. She has no regrets, and quietly passes away in Shia’s arms during the night.
Daybreak hits and Shia hasn’t moved from her spot, heartbroken that she—once again—could not protect the ones that she loves. Shia hears footsteps approach her, expecting them to belong to vengeful Parthevian guards, yet she sits silent and still as she welcomes death in her misery and hopelessness. Shia was wrong, as the footsteps actually belonged to an unsuspecting ally. An unfamiliar voice pierces through the silence: “Do you truly believe that this is your destiny? To die here right now?”

Q: How old was Ayla when she died?
A: Ayla was around 37 years old when she passed away. Shia dies at age 31 prior to the Alma Torran arc, which means that her mother was able to outlive herself by 6 years (which, I mean…is pretty sad… ;w; )

Q: Does Shia get to see Ayla again?
A: Yes, Shia gets to meet her mother, Badr, Esra and her departed friends thanks to Aladdin using Solomon’s wisdom at the end of the Balbadd arc. After talking with her loved ones, Shia apologizes, expressing regret that she can’t join them yet since there is still a role that she needs to fulfill in her and Sinbad’s destiny. That’s the only time Shia gets to see Ayla; due to the unique circumstances surrounding Shia’s death, Shia’s Rukh does not return back to the Great Flow of Rukh, which doesn’t allow her to return and join her loved ones.
