I love that I can't even tell whether this is architecture, macro, or a manipulation--it works so well as a pure abstract.

Thanks Phil! It's no manipulation. It's a detail of a fountain sculpure.

The black triangle in the background arrested my attention immediately, due to its darkness compared to the rest of the piece. The circular foreground object then caught my gaze, but its edge leads you right back to the dark triangle. The pattern of curves seems very structurally and aesthetically important in this piece.
I started to wonder if these objects that appear to be wholly different at first glance due to their contrasting forms might actually be the same sort of stuff, but viewed at different angles. The wedge-like structure in the background is curious--perhaps "sliced" off the foreground object?
Contrast has been deployed to great effect here, and works well in tandem with the forms of the objects to lead your attention back constantly to that dark , sharp triangle that dominates the piece. There is a nice synchronicity of curves between the foreground and background objects and a pleasing interplay of light and planes forming a smooth rhythm.
Overall, I get the feeling of something cold, precise, and artificial--it looks like cold, dead stone. There is also something strange about the lighting; I wonder what kind of situation would cast light so intensely on the foreground object while leaving the triangular form so dark. It's quite a mysterious piece, and the beautiful textures and light patterns invite you to touch it, but it also evokes a feeling of danger.
Very nice piece of photography. Congratulations on your DD!
