Description Aaaaand, i break my AT fan art streak. I couldn't help it, i think he's the one of the coolest villain any of these shows has had yet. Im not sure about the rest of the show, but i like him.
Go Equalists!

It's always good you try new things or you'll go mad I'm still looking for a proper video before I can join in the fandom. Still, well done on creating a menacing quality to him. They'll need to top Fire Lord Ozai for this new series

true, i think i have enough mad going on already. If you do check it out i hope u like it, im a little bit on the fence about the thing overall, but i like amon's concept at the very least.

I was actually content with the original avatar myself and a sequel felt unnecessary, but if they can tell new and fun stories, then why not right?

i agree the first one is the best im not gunna say the new one is up to par, till they get a bit farther in, let them have a chance to flush it out.

Ooh, you like Legend of Korra too? AWESOME. I love that show! (Technology advancement ROCKS HARDCORE!)

Honestly, I can't really peg what type of villain Amon is, and I'm a heavy troper. Is he really a rather vicious anti-villain? (As suggested by his current tendency to go after corrupt benders at the moment?) A hero that's just against the other heroes? (Unlikely, given his resentment of benders, but a possibility!) A more monstrous villain that what's been implied? (Hey, he seems to be similiar in some ways to the ideals of Chairman Mao and we all know how THAT went. He's just a little too cruel to be entirely heroic to me.) Even more evil than Ozai?! (He seems to be advocating genocide on a spiritual level; I'm kinda leaning this way.)

The Equalists are pretty awesome all right; I can't really find it in me to outright support them though. The things they do are just too morally dubious and even foaming-at-the-mouth viciousness. On the other hand, I certainly do sympathize with them. If it wasn't for their black-and-white approach to benders and those who care for them, the Equalists would be just what the world needs to fuse spirituality and technology into a balanced whole.

Amon just looks INCREDIBLY badass here. Just, so awesome. I find his eyes fascinating; from the brief shot we've seen of his eyes, I'm not sure he's actually human. His eyes just look...off. On the other hand, I might be misremembering and it's perfectly possible he's just of Fire Nation descent. (I ought to rewatch the episode!)

Yar, i hope they dont just end up making it simple and black and white. I think they have an opportunity here to make a very complex character and story. But they might just take the easy way out and make him "bad".

Ideally, I think they're going for a 'balance between tradition and modernity, between technology and spirituality'. Because TECHNOLOGY IS AWESOME. (And honestly I am SO SICK of people saying things like good tech doesn't belong in the Avatarverse or that Bending is inherently bad and the EQUALISTS ARE COMPLETELY RIGHT.)

Amon certainly seems complex; my money is on him being the revolutionary from the Aang visions Korra keeps having. He's a little too vicious to be completely likable or heroic; when I see the crowds he's riled into howling for the spiritual mutilation of a teenager in the wrong place (hello, Bolin) I honestly have trouble thinking of him other than a monster. A charismatic and interesting character, but at his core he reminds me a lot of various historical dictators and demagogues.

Fortunately, just making the bad guy 'bad' isn't really an Avatar trait. Even Azula got humanized, and to a lesser extent Ozai as well!

thewhywolf In reply to hvk [2012-05-17 02:06:16 +0000 UTC]

yea, they do a lot of things to characterize him as a villain. The color pallet, the costume choices, where the main characters are in tandem to him. But other then that, everything he's done seems to make sense to me (they thought poor bolin was a triad... who are total jerks), and i kind of agree with his whole antibender thing, though maybe not so absolutist, some benders are cool. I hope the reason for all the evil theatrics is for a cultural commentary latter on that everything isn't as simple as good and evil. And yea, the other series did it great! anng had moral issues, korra seems more one dimensional.
also im only like 4 episodes in... so maybe im behind on what they've done so far. I hope they haven't already squashed my dreams of a complex development. wow, long rant.

Nah, it's been a pretty short rant by my standards. Personally his antibender seems a bit cruel depending on how you view his bending removal ability (seems like spiritual mutilation to me, and quite different from Aang's style).

The latest episode gives him a lot of support and even makes him pretty awesome. Complex INDEED! So no worries so far. I don't think it's very one-dimensional so far; I HAVE seen a lot of people overtly supported the Equalistis; personally I think it's a case of culture clash and people assuming the culture of Republic City is just like wherever they themselves like; the Western world having a long tradition of viewing revolutionaries as inherently noble and heroic. Mind you, this is the same setting where duels to the maiming (FirE Nation) are honorable and acceptable means of resolving conflict and where children given up at birth to be raised communally so that the concept of a family is totally GONE in that particular culture (Air Nomads). Stuff like that, I guess?

i do really love the crazy cultural differences in this show. Ill have to catch up with what Ive missed. I think they do make his antibending look very cruel, but would think he see's it as being very similar to what aang did to ozi, a nonviolent way to stop violence.
