Description Starting a New Year's resolution early. I would like to both become more comfortable in my less familiar media (so paint, graphite, charcoal, pastels, etc.), and start sketching again, to play with ideas that absolute dedication to the reference photo make difficult. So, I'll be posting these 'colour sketches' from time to time, along with anything I might have learned along the way. I hope no one minds.

I started with a portrait of Eddie Izzard, as one of my first full-colour portraits that I'm still willing to show was of him, and it feels nice to come full circle.

Construction Observations:

  • While cotton-fibre paper (e.g. Stonehenge) will hold watercolour well, it is not as amicable to either the pre-soak to stretch it, or large swathes of masking fluid. Both tend to cause it to disintegrate, and I had to re-start this picture. Am considering flattening the painting after completion, rather than initial stretching.
  • Each layer of colour (at least this time) decreases colour intensity, even if the secondary layer is the same as or near to the original colour. For vivid primary colours, leave the first layer clear.
  • Coloured pencil sits more heavily on paper pre-covered in watercolour, leaving a thick, solid layer, with only a suggestion of the underlying colour (unlike over white, where most layers are practically transparent). Not sure why. Will experiment further.
