Description Lúthien Tinúviel
Colored May 30th - June 2nd, 2008
Used ArtRage

Okay, so this is my first digital art ever! Whoooohooo! And I must say I rather like colring digitally. It's a lot of fun. Anyway, this came out much darker than I had on the Tablet I was using at school, maybe the lighting settings were just up high on those or something. So, this was a bit strange, but I was happy I finall was able to put it up on dA. dA is blocked at my school so I had to e-mail myself the picture, get it off and put it up on ArtRage (which took forever to load and save) then actually get around to painting it during class time and then sending it back to myself. Oh, and I made sure I finished all my work that we were doing using the Tablets so it was okay that I was having fun with ArtRage because I had already completed my work.

This is my original, uncolored version and the version I colored: [link]

And if want more information on Luthien, read "The Silmarillion" or you can just look at this: [link]

OF LÚTHIEN THE BELOVED

Such lissom limbs no more shall run
on the green earth beneath the sun;
so fair a maid no more shall be
from dawn to dusk, from sun to sea.
Her robe was blue as summer skies,
but grey as evening was her eyes;
her mantle sewn with lilies fair,
but dark as shadow was her hair.
Her feet were swift as bird on wing,
her laughter merry as the spring;
the slender willow, the bowing reed,
the fragrance of a flowering mead,
the light upon the leaves of trees,
the voice of water, more than these
her beauty was and blissfulness,
her glory and her loveliness.

Thanks! I think it'd be impossible to look like her since she is rather unrealisticly drawn, especialy in terms of the hair. XP

Awww, thank you! I've seen a lot of helpful tutorials around here so I could kind of get an idea of what to look for then I just had to experiment a little with the program that I was using.

Wow, I think this is my favorite work of yours. ^^ The coloring is stunning, kudos for getting a traditional look from a digital medium. Her eyes are lovely and there's just an overall softness to the piece that's very nice.

Theophilia In reply to mijojo [2008-06-17 14:15:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, thank you very much for the delightful comment! It was fun to experiment with, the softness probably came from the "airbrush" tool that I used.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to try out. I think the company lets you download a version of ArtRage from their website. I don't know if my parents will let me though.

Lucky, you got to use a tablet...XD I have to use the mouse. I'm hopefully getting a tablet for my b-day though

Theophilia In reply to harumeau [2008-06-03 18:34:38 +0000 UTC]

^ ^ Thanks! Yeah, we had tablets at our school though I honestly have no ideas how they could afford it. Ahhh well. I tried it using a mouse and it wasn't so bad. You sure are lucky though, you have photoshop. I had to use ArtRage.

harumeau In reply to Theophilia [2008-06-04 06:19:41 +0000 UTC]

Is ArtRage an online thing? Or how does it work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to harumeau [2008-06-04 11:45:38 +0000 UTC]

No it's not online, I think you can download it or buy the full version for 25$. This is their website: [link] I don't know how it compares to photoshop, but I know it's a lot less sophisticated. Hmmmm, I suppose ArtRage is like a more sophisticated version of Paint with layers.

Whoooaaaa!!!

Now that is beautiful! It looks like a portrait out of a medieval story book!

You used a Tablet and an art program huh? Lucky you. One big reason why I don't draw much is because my scanner just makes it hard to get a solid lineart. If I had a Tablet I wouldn't have to worry about it (that and I'd probably have cleaner art. )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Lykex [2008-06-03 18:36:30 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you! Yeah, I got to use a tablet and ArtRage but I don't have either so I had to work on it at school. I doubt my parents will ever get me a tablet or photoshop either. It's just WAY too expensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lykex In reply to Theophilia [2008-06-04 06:30:25 +0000 UTC]

I hear ya. Personally, it's one reason why I prefer sticking to writing storylines than drawing out my characters. Most anime and manga artists tend to have at least one expensive piece of hardware.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Lykex [2008-06-04 11:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It's not fair. Nah, just kidding, I think I'd like it though, but maybe you could get ArtRage, it's only 25$ to buy. [link] It's not as sophisticated as photoshop, but at least you can color your pictures digitally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lykex In reply to Theophilia [2008-06-05 07:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Nah, it's not really the program I need. I'm just pretty messy with my pencil and eraser. My scanner's not helping either . If there's something I need it's a Tablet. Ooohhh a Tablet...*looks at a Tablet longingly*

Oh well, even so...

As long as I have my writing talent. I SHALL PREVAIL OVER THIS HANDICAP!!

Even if I have to resort to writing crazy systematic scripts!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Lykex [2008-06-05 18:27:10 +0000 UTC]

Personally I think a Tablet's harder to draw with, but maybe you'd have an easier time with it. Hehe, but then again, I don't mind when the whole side of my hand turns pitch-black.

You're very welcome. I'm impressed it's your first attempt with digital coloring. I've been trying to digitally color my own pictures for some time, and they don't even come close.

Theophilia In reply to ArtemisBlue [2008-06-03 18:45:58 +0000 UTC]

I learn pretty quick with things like technology and also I've been read/heard a bunch of people here on dA give helpful tips on how to color digitally so when I started messing around and seeing how things worked it became a lot easier.

ArtemisBlue In reply to Theophilia [2008-06-03 20:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Those must've been very helpful tutorials. From now on, I'll read before I try to do something.

Theophilia In reply to ArtemisBlue [2008-06-04 11:53:36 +0000 UTC]

Mostly like little tid-bits. For example, a friend of mine on here (blackcat101) was telling me how digital art worked with layers as a big part, so when I got on ArtRage I just started messing around with it and using layers. Just poke around and see what happens. And experiment. That's what I did.

Sorry, let me edit that; for the neck the first time it looked very strange, so I looked at myself in the mirror and drew my neck. Kinda. But I didn't use a model for the face.

Thank you! ^ ^ No, I didn't use a model, I just made it up. But I was looking at a drawing book and the page I was looking at was about drawing beautiful women. But I didn't have a model for it.
