Description Lúthien Tinúviel
January 18th 2008
Pencil (up to 6B), Paper, shading pencils
Took about 4-5 hours to do

So, last night (Jan. 17th, 2008), I was trying to draw a picture of Keeper and Creidhe from Foxmask by Juliet Marillier, but I could just not get Keeper’s face down! Ahhh, it still eludes me. In fact, I erased the face so much that it ruined the paper and it began to tear. So for kicks, I thought, “Hey, I’ll try and draw Lúthien Tinúviel from The Silmarillion.” So, here’s how it turned out.

All in all, I’m actually quite pleased with it. I think it turned out well for being relatively quick (compared to my other pictures that is, because they are usually very detailed with loads of intricate stuff that nobody ever really sees and kind of ruins the pictures anyway. ) But I think I’m getting better at shading black hair. (I hope so!) Better than this I think: [link] . I really don't know what I should do for a background though, it probably doesn’t need a background, but I like filling up the page. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do for a background, I’d like to hear them. My only problem with this picture is that she doesn’t look exactly how I imagined Lúthien, but I suppose that that would be quite a feat to accomplish, seeing as how she was the fairest of the Children of Ilúvatar.

I believe that Lúthien Tinúviel means “Enchantress Nightingale” in Sindarian. Or maybe it’s something like, “Child of Twilight.” For those who don’t know her story, it’s rather long but this has a good summary of it: [link] or you could just read The Silmarillion.

From the Ley of Lethien:

OF LÚTHIEN THE BELOVED

Such lissom limbs no more shall run
on the green earth beneath the sun;
so fair a maid no more shall be
from dawn to dusk, from sun to sea.
Her robe was blue as summer skies,
but grey as evening was her eyes;
her mantle sewn with lilies fair,
but dark as shadow was her hair.
Her feet were swift as bird on wing,
her laughter merry as the spring;
the slender willow, the bowing reed,
the fragrance of a flowering mead,
the light upon the leaves of trees,
the voice of water, more than these
her beauty was and blissfulness,
her glory and her loveliness.

Maybe I’ll water color this sometime, I’d like to do her blue dress.

Lúthien Tinúviel and The Silmarillion belong to J.R.R. Tolkien

And please, critique away! I know this is far from perfect, and critique is always vastly helpful in becoming a better artist. It would be very appreciated!

EDIT: Aha! I conquered my procrastination (for once) I fixed the neck!

My, what detail! I am amazed, usually it is very difficult to make a woman still appear feminine while drawing her neck thick enough to support her head in real life. Though I think the neck looks a little strange to me...I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it appears....well, perhaps it's the two bones heading down towards the collarbone that look a little off.
The nose seems a little low too, and the ears are obviously very different.
Other than that, however, it is a beautiful picture. I apologize if these things have already been critiqued to you I don't have time to read all the other comments....but overall, very nicely achieved.

Ah thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment dear brother in Christ! Yes, the neck is a little weird. I improvised it (since I didn't know excactly how those tendons would look at that angle) so that's why it turned out strange. I probably should have just looked at myself in the mirror... But I hadn't thought of that at the time. The collar bone also is messed up, but I'm planning on fixing it...eventually.

Once again, thank you for the compliments and the kind words!

God Bless! Namarie! Deus Tecum!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it. As much as i love Tolkien, I actually have't drawn a lot of pictures from his books. I only have three, well, four, but the other is in the Scraps section. But if you liek Tolkien art, there are a bunch of fantastic artists on here:

Just a few of them. But they all are fantastic!

awww. she's so pretty. she has a very soft face, and lovely eyes. plus, she's got the shineh hair! i was just telling someone else how everyone loves shineh hair XD
well, anyways, her eyebrows and nose, cheeks, lips, and ears are all very well done! plus, i noticed her body is turned to a degree. very pretty altogether! i love it! ^^

Awwww...Thank you so much! Yeah, she does have shiney hair...but no one would model for me (especially twin, she *HATES* ( ) modeling for me. With a passion. And when she finally consents to doing it, she is extremely difficult and grumbles and argues a lot. *sigh* I just relaized, in regards to her neck, that I could have just looked at myself in the mirror instead of improvising I suppose I can alway redo that.

Aside from the tendons in her neck, which have been mentioned above, this is an excellent drawing. I especially admire the shading! And the light in her eyes and hair is amazing.

harumeau [2008-01-19 07:09:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and I think 'Luthien' actually means something more like 'Blossom' or something like that. The word 'loth' or 'luth' means flower. The '-ien' is just a feminine suffix.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Qitian In reply to harumeau [2008-01-20 11:35:35 +0000 UTC]

Where did you find the "luth" for flower? Because I've only ever known "lúth" to be "enchantment", which would indeed make Lúthien the enchantress far more likely than "Blossom"...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

harumeau In reply to Qitian [2008-01-30 03:49:02 +0000 UTC]

I didn't know 'luth' was enchantment. I have this book of elvish that says 'luth' is similar to the word 'loth' which means flower...so yeah.

"I have this book of elvish that says 'luth' is similar to the word 'loth' which means flower"

Well, the German word for book (Buch) is similar to the word for brook (Bach). It would be silly to assume that books are liquid or brooks have pages for all that.
There are, sadly, a whole lot of books of Elvish that brim with mistakes or are incomplete at best. Not all that surprising, considering Tolkien kept changing and adding stuff and much wasn't published until much later (or still isn't). This may be one of the few incidences where some webpages (not all, of course, but those of the better researchers such as Helge K. Fauskanger, Carl F. Hostetter or Florian Dombach) are more reliable - at least they're being updated, whereas a book published, say, 30 years ago missed 30 years of discovery...

harumeau In reply to Qitian [2008-02-04 09:28:44 +0000 UTC]

You're right about that...maybe I should take my elvish references out of the Lost Road appendices instead.

Qitian In reply to harumeau [2008-02-04 10:00:57 +0000 UTC]

*g* They're not exactly all that up-to-date either, though. And they need a lot of puzzling and playing with Grimm's law and lenition and vowel shifts and what not to get you anywhere...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

harumeau In reply to Qitian [2008-02-07 10:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...It's too bad there aren't any completely reliable elvish books. At least none that I've found.

Qitian In reply to harumeau [2008-02-07 11:54:18 +0000 UTC]

It is. Not all of us have the time to learn the language from scrap, then read through all the various books and dismiss what's nonsense and keep what's good... *sighs*

Thanks! I know, I tried erasing the tendons a lot but they just...well...they got messed up. That's what comes from improvising necks.
