Description
Shadows of the Past is a continuation of my previous web Comic "Without Magic ", in which Twililight was tasked with findout out "what makes her special as a pony" outside of magic. You do not need to have read Without Magic in order to enjoy Shadows of the past, though some scenes will make more sense if you have. In case you haven't read it, Without Magic was written back in 2012, which is why Shadows of the Past features "old Twilight", before she became a Princess. Essentially, this comic is set in the space between seasons 2 and 3. So some elements will be written with season 1-2 canon in mind, rather than season 4-7. Which haven't happened yet in this timeline.Please do NOT post errors or corrections to this page, please post them to my profile page instead.
This page is more or less just exposition to outline the elements of the missing foal storyline that I only hinted at in Without Magic.
Please DON'T post comments asking me how come Twilight didn't know about the missing foals, or why nopony told her. It's mostly just for reasons of narrative convenience, and there is no greater meaning to it. Twilight was too busy with her own problems to take an active interest in what was going on in Ponyville.
I deliberately wanted to keep this storyline to hints and foreshadowing in the last comic so as not to distract from the main storyline, and I wanted the introduction to SofP to be very short, so that I wouldn't have to do too many dialogue heavy exposition pages.

Dude, if Strongheart and Wildfire found out about this they would help out by searching for the missing foals, both grew up in an orphanage, the same orphange but still. And before you ask Strongheart is my pony oc, I forgot about Strong Heart the buffalo, the same goes with Wildfire, forgot there is a brown haired mare called the same thing.

In reality there are a number of countries where it's still a cultural practice to kill or abandon children of a specific gender, because the other gender is preferred.
The world is a messed up place some times.

I read somewhere that china once had a law stating you could only have one child due to overpopulation. because of this and the fact that females don't carry on the family name new born girls were often victims to that sort of things.

It's funny that you should say that, but I spent a fair few years living in China while that policy was in place.
People were initially prohibbited from having more than one child, and were penalized if they had more (Usually involving having to pay lots of cash). The bit about boys carrying on the family name is probably more of a "Western interpretation" though there is some truth to it. People would sometimes abandon their first child if it were a girl, or they would give them away to a childless relative and put their name on the birth certificate. More recently they started aborting female infants if they could afford the ultra-sound to determine the babies gender.
People also resorted to stealing boys. There was (and still is) a lucrative trade in kidnapping children from poor migrants in the south and then selling them to wealthy families in the north.
Eventually, things went too far, and the government found that wealthy well educated people weren't even having one child. The better educated discovered that they liked birth control and having more spare time, than raising children. So they brought in a new law allowing a couple to have two children if their first child were a girl, on the condition that they were both either college graduates or were members of an ethnic minority group.
The laws have been relaxed even more now, though there are still some local laws that penalize people with too many children. Usually the have to pay a lot of money, or their children have their college entrance grades penalized making it harder for them to get into a good college (VERY important in China).
China isn't alone in people killing or abandoning daughters. In India and similar places there have also been problems.
There have been some rumors that this is happening in England as well.
