Shadows of the Past is a continuation of my previous web Comic "Without Magic ", in which Twilight was tasked with finding out out "what makes her special as a pony" outside of magic. You do not need to have read Without Magic in order to enjoy Shadows of the past, though some scenes will make more sense if you have.

Oh, I know about lunatic conspiracies. My family are crazy preppers.

We've got a basement that looks like the armory from Terminator II because they can't decide who the bigger threat is, the communists, the liberals, the conservatives, of the zombies.

I actually own a zombie rifle, with a trenching spike built into the butt-stock for smashing zombie skulls. It was a sweet 16 gift.

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2017-12-21 20:06:16 +0000 UTC]

Sounds to me pretty much like I would imagine the U.S. rural areas. Except the zombie part. I mean I understand your family´s distrust of communists and your government, but zombies aren´t even scientifically possible. Something like an alien invasion, although highly unlikely, would at least be possible. I think they watched too many movies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-23 12:02:48 +0000 UTC]

While Night of the Living Dead zombies aren't scientifically possible, but 28 Day's Later Zombies might be.

Generally speaking, the fear is that something bad will go down in the outside world, and whoever survives will eventually realize that we survived it and they will come looking for what we have.

We're pretty self sufficient for food, water and power, and people don't want to share it with hoards of Zombies, or refugees. There's no legitimate reason for a farm to have a 20mm anti ordinance rifle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2017-12-24 16:34:16 +0000 UTC]

That depends on your definition of zombies, I guess. I only count undead as real zombies.

And if something bad is going down, it´s most likely due to a war. With more and more countries having nuclear weapons, the probability of one of them using them also rises, that´s a simpe numbers game. The question is, would you really want to survive that? Fallout may be fun as a game, in reality it would be much less so.

A 20mm rifle does sound a bit excessive.

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-25 17:19:09 +0000 UTC]

The idea that a lot of people in town have is that we're far enough away from anywhere that would be targeted that that we'd survive, and because we're largely self sufficient we'd go on surviving just like our ancestors did.

It's not just a nuclear war that people are preparing for. It's the social collapse that people are most worried about.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2017-12-26 10:11:40 +0000 UTC]

The fallout from a nuclear war will cause serious problems with soil and water being radioactively polluted, something your ancestors didn´t have to deal with.

Social collapse is still at least some decades away, although it is not unlikely to happen one day. Overpopulation, limited resources and an economic system based on continuous exponential growth just are a bad combination.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-26 12:55:32 +0000 UTC]

We've been at this a long time. Long before nuclear weapons existed. People were afraid of the government trying to take over, of people trying to take over the government, of Soviet invasion, and then of social collapse. Zombies are pretty much just one more enemy that people think is out there.

As a town we produce significantly more food than we consume, we're self sufficient for water and electricity (My family were never on the grid for water, and we went totally off grid for power a few years back). We can be self sufficient for fuel if we need to be through biofuel, but it's more convenient to import right now.

Presuming that there isn't a nuclear war, or that it's a limited war which destroys the largest cities, then we could survive the fallout. Filtering radioactive particles out of the water is only a matter of putting in a couple of extra filters into the purification system that we already use, and the hills around us would protect us from a lot of the airborne fallout. Our distance form the closest targets would provide us additional protection.

If it's not a nuclear war, then we're armed enough to defend ourselves from most small raiding parties, and isolated enough that any large armed group would be more likely to attack a higher profile target.

Personally, I'd rather not end up in that kind of situation, the town was founded by isolationists and has spent decades attracting prepers and survivalists. They think that they can weather out any storm, and that having a basement that's swimming in ammunition will keep them safe.

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-26 12:43:49 +0000 UTC]

Being realistic, there are only two countries with the capacity to devastate America in a nuclear war. One of them is Russia, and the other is America itself.

The world would have to already be in the toilet before Russia launched against the US. That's Armageddon territory.

Other nuclear capable countries have very limited stockpiles of nuclear munitions, and very limited capacity to launch them. Countries like France, India, Pakistan only have a handful of warheads, and only have medium range missiles. They can hit their neighbors but can't attack the US. India and Pakistan are only really capable of hitting a few strategic targets in each other.

North Korea's nuclear warheads are WWII technology, and are too large to fit on their missiles. Even then they'd hit South Korea or Japan, and are not even close to having a weapon capable of hitting the US.

France's weapons are small warheads that are dependant on bombers to deliver. They don't have stealth bombers, and even if they were to use air-to-air refuelling they'd be massacred long before they were in striking range of the US.

That leaves Britain. Most of their weapons are nuclear capable sea mines designed to prevent a Soviet invasion of their country, or are missiles\torpedoes launched from stealth submarines. They could probably wipe out the East coast, but they don't have sufficient warheads to do more than attack a few large cities and military bases. For Britain to launch against the US ... well ... the world would have to be even further in the toilet than for Russia to launch.

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2017-12-29 19:53:49 +0000 UTC]

You forgot China. I think they are more important in such an analysis than India or Pakistan. Of course they also would have no reason to attack (as far as we know).
And you are right about North Korea, but it is only a matter of time (might be decades) until they sized down their nukes or improved their rockets. But the goal of North Korea is obviously to conquer the south, and the US is preventing that with their presence there. So this conflict will continue for a long time.

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-29 20:18:27 +0000 UTC]

I used to live in China, and I spent a lot of time in the province that's right next to North Korea.

The China that you hear about on the news, and actual China are pretty different places. For the most part China would prefer to ignore politics in the rest of the world, and only bother itself with the bits that are interested in buying cheap consumer goods.

China doens't really consider itself as a nuclear power. Even though it is. The people don't think about their nukes in the same way as people in America or Russia do. Essentially, they are an absolute last ditch weapon that would be used if there were foreign troops already on the beaches. This is largely because China's nuclear weapons were more aimed at deterring Russian attack than American attack (China had "the wrong sort of communist" during the cold war and was more afraid of Russia than America).

China has relatively few warheads, and even fewer missiles to load them on. Many are old\outdated and are only medium range. Few could reach America, let alone target anything smaller than the largest coastal cities.

For China to nuke the US you'd literally have to have America launching a land invasion against China, and the world would already be in the toilet by that time.

In realistically, China is more likely to attack the US economically. China owns a lot of America's debts, and has a lot of US currency. If China really wanted to it could devalue the dollar in a heartbeat and take half of Western capitalism down with it. Then it could simply buy up the bits that it wanted and go on from there.

China has been invaded and attacked and blockaded for the last 150 years. Everybody from The British empire to imperial Japan has take a bite out of China. The people see themselves as victims or foreign aggression and the idea of them attacking somebody else is pretty far from their minds.

North Korea also isn't stupid (it's crazy, but not stupid). It knows that the chances of actually nuking America are very small because of the distance and because of America's anti-missile systems.

North Korea knows that it has a much better chance of hitting Japan and South Korea, so that's where it's nukes will be aimed.

FYI, North Korea doesn't want to invade south Korea. That's not even a thing. North Korea is afraid of being invaded, most of what it is doing is an effort to make themselves seem strong to scare the US off of invading. They'd much rather just remain isolated than invade anywhere else.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2017-12-30 16:13:18 +0000 UTC]

How do you know that North Korea doesn´t want to invade the south? They already tried in the past. From what I´ve been told (I have 3 chinese coworkers), it´s rather unusual to see North Koreans in China, because working abroad is a rather large privilege there, and most wouldn´t talk much, even less so about politics. NK doesn´t really have to fear an US attack all that much, because China doesn´t want to have US troops at their border.

So you lived in China but decided to live in an isolationist rednecks town instead? That does say a lot about China. Also you sure know a lot of detail about the military capacities of countries.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2017-12-30 16:41:42 +0000 UTC]

I know that North Korea doesn't want to invade South Korea because it's an insular inwards looking state who are quite open about what they do and do not want, and because the North Korean leaders know that the act of invading North Korea would essentially mean the end of North Korea.

Imagine if Mexico were to invade the US. Ignoring how ridiculous this would be from a military perspective, America is a country with a much larger wealthier population and a much more hedonistic approach to culture. If Mexico were to invade the US it would essentially see Mexico being assimilated into the country that it was supposed to be conquering. You'd soon see a Starbucks on every street and Walmart would buy out its Mexican rivals and take over. They'd be eating hot dogs and speaking English in no time flat. Mexico would be a country in name only.

It's the same with North Korea. It's poor, it's people are isolated, and if it were ever reunified with South Korea then South Korean culture and wealth would flood across the border and North Korea would become South Korea 2.0.

Incidentally, North Korea didn't try to invade South Korea. There wasn't a North Korea back then.

In 1945 Korea was a province of Japan due to an earlier military invasion. When Japan lost WWII it's military retreated. Russian troops moved in from the North to flush the last of the Japanese out. When Japan surrendered The Russian influenced North sided with Russia and China over America as they saw the US as being just another foreign army trying to control them. There was a war, and when the western powers tried to take the north by force the Chinese moved in to stop them. This is what divided north and south.

There was no North and South Korea as we know them today before that.

There are actually a lot more north Koreans in China than you might think, but the Chinese government doens't want them there as most of them are illegal immigrants. It's very similar to Mexico and the US in that respect. North Korean men tend to be near slaves, and women literal slaves. Usually in factories or building sites, and brothels, respectively. You get a whole lot of "mail order" North Korean brides, too.

I didn't really "decide" to live in an isolated redneck town. I was born here, and my family have lived here for almost 200 years. So it's home, despite all of it's annoyances.

Then there's the matter of having been under 18 when I returned to the US ... There was this judge, and this bit about being a juvenile, and the rest is history.

Long story short, I can't leave till I'm 21.

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2018-01-02 08:23:31 +0000 UTC]

North and South Korea were founded in 1948. The Korean war startet in 1950, with a large scale attack from North Korea into the South, and for a short while they controlled almost all of the South except for a small brigdehead. Then US intervened, easily defeated the North Korean Military and invaded the North, and then China joined the war. I advise reading the Korean war Wikipedia article, or any history book about the cold war era.
North Korea is a militaristic dictatorship that´s threathening their southern Neighbours and the US constantly, they are for sure not peaceful.

And you went to China underage and illegaly? Wow, you sure will have a heck of a story to tell your grandchildren one day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2018-01-02 20:09:53 +0000 UTC]

That's a very US centric version, and it's somewhat of an over simplification. It wasn't "North Korea" as we know it today, which didn't exist. There was the US backed Korea and the Communist backed Korea.

It's pretty hard to deny that North Korea is a brutal military dictatorship, and it's impossible to deny that it constantly threatens pretty much anybody that disagrees with it, but in reality the North has absolutely no intention of actually invading the South.

The primary objective of the North Korean government is to ensure their own survival. Attempting to invade South Korea would quickly lead them to lose power. If they won North Korea would be assimilated by South Korea in short order. It has a much larger and wealthier population. It would be like opening up the border between the US and Mexico. Pretty soon Mexico would be overwhelmed by Ameirca's larger wealthier population.

Of course, they won't win, and they know it. They are crazy, but not stupid. It suits them to make threats, it doesn't suit them to act upon them.

If North Korea wanted to invade it would have done it during the cold war when China and Russia would have been more likely to support them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Twistershy In reply to TheBadFaerie [2018-01-04 09:43:30 +0000 UTC]

Now you´re just ignoring the facts. They did try to invade during the cold war in 1950, nad both North and South Korea were already founded.

I´m pretty sure that chinese propaganda came up with a different version of how the Korean war went down. The people you have talked to in China only know what their government tells them. Just look at the amount of internet censorship in mainland China. They can´t look anything up on Wikipedia, because it´s blocked. Just like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, anything Google, Instagram, just to name a few. How would people there gather any information aside from state media?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Twistershy [2018-01-04 20:32:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm not ignoring facts, I'm not over simplifying them.

You're conflating the Soviet backed government of Korea with North Korea. North Korea didn't exist at that time, and wouldn't exist until some time later on.

At the start of the war there were two governments running in parallel. Both were the government of the entire Korean peninsular, one was recognized by the western allies, and one was recognized by Soviet Russia and Mainland China. Neither of them was North Korea or South Korea, as there was no North or South Korea. Both were successor governments to the Japanese colonial administration which ended when Japan surrendered and it's forces were pushed out of Korea.

This is the problem with the US centric view of history, it teaches an extremely simplified version of events and leads people to believe that things are black and white.

I used to live in China, the extent of censorship is massively overstated. You're also presuming that people are are dumb. There were literally a million Chinese veterans of the Korean war. You can block Google or Twitter or Facebook, but yucan't block somebody's grandfather from telling old war stories.

Your description fits for the time period between 1945 and 1948. It does not apply for 1950, and I can´t see how this is an oversimplification. Both states were founded in 1948, the border was set to be the 38th latitude.

Critics aside, this is a very heavy comic in terms of background information, keep up the awesome job my friend!

That would be quite demanding to do on all pages from now on, but it would be quite generous as well. However, the same could be done about what is written on all signposts and posters alike, but that would be insane to do since each page has countless stuff besides the background chatter as you put it, it would be amazing to be able to just normally read them the way they are. For the time being at least, it would be quite helpful to include the background chatters in the descriptions.
