A big Thank You to Julian Humphries on Flickr for letting me use this photo of his friend Amber. He is an amazing photographer with, in my opinion some of the best collection of portrait photography in the web.[link]
I chose this photo because of her amazing eyes and wanted to see if I could convey that onto paper.
I thought this would be a straight forward drawing but it caused me problems. I redone the lips and nose twice due to getting my proportions wrong. This has made me wonder about realism vs artistic impression. At what point do you stop tweaking in order to reach a perfect likeness and should you be reaching for it in the first instance. I mean if you are doing a drawing for someone or it's someone that everyone will recognise, then I suppose you have to at least make the drawing recognisable. But if it's only for pleasure then does it matter if the proportions are out (which makes or breaks any likeness)? Any thoughts?
Anyway I loved drawing this despite some frustrations, the model is beautiful and I hope I captured those eyes.

I wonder that myself sometimes too - when do I stop with all the realistic details and leave it with sketchy lines and unblended colors, and let ME come out in the picture? I'm trying to do that more. It's hard.

I'd much rather have people post meaningful comments on MY art, so I try and leave that on other people's. I'll NEVER leave one word comments: WOW! Beautiful! Much better to say WHY I like it, or what feelings I got from it.
I never said these artists weren't talented, I just wish they would do original stuff - directly copying an image found on Google - how many people are doing the exact same thing? And that ties into the comment I left on your picture - I'll tolerate celebrity pictures IF they add their own artistic touches to it. Incorporate a new background, add a fantasy twist, or SOMETHING to make them unique. Realism is fantastic, and I love to do that myself, but why bother doing the same celebrity images as everyone else? My gallery is filled with my nieces and nephews and people I know! They are much more important in my life than actors and musicians.

I'd say you we're 90% right in your opinion, but if I was to play Devil's Advocate, I'd say; art is art and can be whatever you want it to be from either an artists or the viewers perspective. I'm sure you'd agree that if celebs inspire people to pic up a pencil or for people to be inspired by their creation, then that's an argument for drawing them.
People draw for different reasons, some for money, recognition or as I tend to do; just for some me time (head phones on, ipod on shuffle). I'd be happy to draw a celeb portrait, but I am kinda bored of seeing the same people all the time. Although if it's an interesting and unique picture then I suppose don't mind who it is really.
It would make for an interesting debate, and you have a very strong point (that I tend to agree with).

I will agree that art can be many different things. All of these celebrity portraits ARE art, no question there. They are just so unoriginal, is all I'm saying. You could do a search on here and find more than a dozen drawings copied from the exact same photo. You wouldn't be able to tell one artist from the other. No individuality! No artistic flair to make it their own.
Yes, drawing what inspires you is wonderful, and any piece is good practice. And perhaps you are particularly fond of an actress or musician. But who is really important in your life? I generally draw my family and friends - people that I know and love. Much more fun for them to see their pictures too.

Great job, i love the stark contrast in the sharpness in the eyes, nose and mouth, compared to the softness of the skin hair and surroundings. And i think you did what you set out to achieve with the eyes.
