Book Cover for Author Terry Cronin’s Skinvestigator Series

Digital Painting

This is the third of a series of three book covers for Terry Cronin who is a dermatologist in Melbourne, Florida. The women were either posed or put together with different body parts I found from my reference library then digitally painted. I created over 100 brushes over the last few years and making particular parts that have a painterly quality to them. This last one saw a few additions. Making brushes is like a scientist trying to find the right formula for something he/she is looking for. It’s always great when you get something that looks completely new and unplanned. Compositionally this one was harder since there was a dog who was also “Frankenstiened” together. I think doing something that is so well known has a challenge to it. Since I had to work on the Coppertone idea I was looking for ways it can be new and different. I’ve seen the Carmen Electra and countless takes on this theme. I decided to add roller skates to her and just not have the 50’s pin up finger in face idea. I wanted to show a scene that would be funny if it actually happened in front of you and not so well rehearsed. In this one unlike the other two covers I worked primarily from a picture of my girlfriend and studio mate. She has some experience in modelling though I had a crappy 12mp Canon that distorts everything. So I had to be careful with the extra foreshortening it causes. Overall it was a good experience though it was hard cause I’m juggling a dozen other things. I will start posting my other work soon.
