Description

More pterosaur practice. This time giant azdharchids. I think it turned out great . This is my first ever depiction of hatzegopteryx, a massive pterosaur from europe . It probably was the dominant predator of its environment since hateg island where its fossils were discovered lacked any large theropod dinosaurs (at least we havent found any so far). Instead this flying monster  stalked the lands eating anything that would fit in its monstrous beak. Hatzegopteryx had a much more robust neck compared to the other 2 giant azdharchids arambourgianian and the famous quetzalcoatlus.  I based the appearence of one of the largest modern flying birds, the marabu stork  and it really fits the animal well in my opinion

edit: already updated the design thanks to some feedback from www.deviantart.com/paleosir . Turns out I overscaled the entire animal by a factor of 2! (yeah go figure) Also turns out I had to make the head even bigger  and shorten the torso. It should be  more accurate now

This is an interesting depiction of Hatzegopteryx, but there's an inaccuracy. The fourth wing finger was actually folded more inwards, close to the wrist and going over the elbows(not under), allowing the wing to neatly fold out of the way, instead of slightly splaying out backwards exposing them. This fossil shows how the wings folded  pterosaurheresies.files.wordpr…

Don't listen to that website - the creator, David Peters, is pretty controversial.

dont be fooled by the head, it was actually very light with huge fenestra lightening the overall weight of the skll. In fact the torso, albeit short housed all the organs and a lot of muscle so the centre of gravity would not have been as far to the front as it might seem. Hatzegoperyx is estimated by some to have reached around 200 kg in weight and a lot of it would have been distributed in the torso

That's oversized by a factor of 2 linearly (so 8 times too big in volume)
But nice work artistically.

sooo I need to scale it down by 50%?

Roughly yes.

Proportions are a bit iffy but there's no way it's that off size-wise

Yes it would roughly. Your rendition seems overscaled as well, though a bit less. The shoulder of this animal would be ~1.8 m high roughly when I scaled it so it seems.

not too sure scaling it down by 50 % would mean the animals skull would be only around 1,5 metres in length , however the skull most likely was around 3 metres long (or so I read). I scaled it down slightly, took some new measurements but 50 % would be too much. This reconstruction here for example is almost the same in size

Corallianassa In reply to Teratophoneus [2019-03-05 06:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Liam's is overscaled as well, try overlaying Mark Witton's skeletal. What doesn't entirely help is that the skull in your rendition is smaller relative to the body and limbs than in other renditions (for example, the torso in your rendition is ~ 2 m long, while in reality it was under 1 m)

ok , I scaled up the head by  a whopping 150 % and downscaled the rest of the animal accordingly, also shortening the torso a bit. I think it should be fine now,I´d be glad if you could take another look

Definitely looks closer to Witton's skeletal now. Very nice job.

thanks, its nice to have people like you that  point such discrepancies in my drawings, I really am no expert, I consider myself more a dinosaur enthusiast rather than a real expert like many other high quality palaeo artists are. But I still try to maintain a high quality standard in accuracy for my reconstructions  and its guys like you that help me with that, so thank you, its very much appreciated!
