Detailed commission for CameronBlackTD featuring Lucky the fox, and Waffles the German Shepherd! I did my best to make the lighting look as real as possible in this one, since afternoon lighting has something I've often had trouble getting to look right since it's directly overhead. I think I got it this time!
Note: The background is a blurred public domain photo of some clouds. I didn't paint it myself. I was planning to paint over it, but I liked the shapes too much. X)

I draw almost every single day, and I work on my flaws when I see them. I don't try to cover them up or ignore them. For example, I used to be pretty bad at posing, but instead of just drawing normal, plain, boring poses that were easy to draw, I forced myself to draw poses that were challenging. Just like exercising every day, I naturally got better by doing it every day.

You got it! This type of art is called anthropomorphism, or "anthro" for short, which is the name for personified animals or objects. Most people have seen this type of art in Disney movies like The Lion King, Zootopia, The Brave Little Toaster, etc. I've been a big fan of that stuff since I was a kid, which is why I'm a professional anthro artist today.

Wee nitpick: By definition, afternoon lighting cannot be directly overhead. And outside the tropics, lighting at any time of year at any time of day is never directly overhead.

Yeah you're correct, and it's not literally overhead (you can see the highlight on their nose showing it's off to the left a bit), but still, I've always had trouble with this kind of lighting. Knowing how to tint the colors, where the shadows will drop, how dark they should be, how strong the bounce light is, etc. Maybe I'm wrong and it has nothing to do with the lighting direction, but I've always felt way more comfortable with other light conditions. X)
