Description Because apparently I've become a watercolor addict! And because I felt like drawing a Martian who's not Pirossa for a change. He did show up in at least one part of the story, though! Nr'tupa is the first Khedephi Martian encountered by Trean's exploratory crew that landed on Mars in 2018.

This week's challenge at #ATC-Exchange is really giving me an excuse to draw some of the Astral Arcana aliens without breaking my brain stretching it beyond basic human anatomy. Lazy, lazy girl.

2.5"x3.5". Watercolor, Micron pen and gel pen on bristol.

Oh, also... again, on the off chance that anyone wants to buy this guy (someone got the other one, after all! ), note me.

Yes, lack of vowels...

At the time Alan and I did this part of the story, it wasn't unrelated at all; it's related to the whole earlier part of the story with all the Trean stuff, but it's got no bearing on the "present", which is to say the main story I'm actually writing.

ARGH CONFUZZLING!

I will say it again--his face is just stunning. I love the way you use watercolours as well, with the purples in the brown and the greens in the yellow skin to shade it. You're so talented, stop it D:

Thank you thank you!! I'm telling you, having been doing almost nothing but Photoshop for months has IMMEASURABLY improved my skill with color. Screw you, learning with traditional media! Everything's better with PS! I'm so glad you like him.

OMG, the details are amazing!
The golden mask is fantastic, and the stone on his forehead is so... strange *-* (But in a good way XDXD)
And I love how you work with watercolors!

Thank you!! It took me a LONG time to figure out how to watercolor properly without making all the colors run into each other. D: I'm really glad you like it!

The forehead stone is actually a sightless third eye. All the gold Martians have one, and it's the source of their minimal psionic ability. :3

You're welcome! ^3^
Aaaaah, I know what you mean! I occasionally use watercolors... and it's a pain! XD
And I'm glad you're glad!

Oooooh! *O* So cool! *O*
This is very interesting *-* So, you have some kind of sci-fi story for your OCs, right? *3* *curious*

Yeah, sort of! The Astral Arcana story is a work in progress, but it's basically the written version of the tabletop RP of the setting that I did with my fiance. I have the prologue posted somewhere in my gallery, so if you want you can read it... I'm really insecure about my writing, though. If you care, I've also got a journal full of frequently asked questions about the setting and the characters, which is here: [link] And that's far more information than anyone needed to know about it, ever.

Ooooh, understood! *3*b
I read it! *O*/ (And also the character sheets in your gallery )
I really like it! I love how you blend sci-fi and fantasy *-*
And I read the prologue, too (Don't worry for the writing, I couldn't notice if it's good or not XD I only tought to translate it correctly )
I'm beginning to love your story It's so particular *-*

Wooow! so I'm definitely fond of martian people But..do they all wear those masks? they have some function or are just a...folkloristic decoration?
*i'm curious!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to raka-raka [2010-03-28 20:41:39 +0000 UTC]

All the gold Martians do wear them, yeah. Not 100% of the time, but they always have a mask on their person somewhere. They really don't have a "function" so much as it's just a really old tradition; the way Alan explains it is that Martians have very deep-seated emotions but prefer to not let their feelings be seen on their faces. So basically, yeah, it's just kind of a cultural thing.

Deep-seated emotions?! Omg, Pirossa is really a strange martian, then!

"they always have a mask on their person somewhere"
this remembrs me of a gift you received by a certain sister of the horde...

Lol, yes! He really does like to wear his heart on his sleeve... and what a shallow heart it is.

YES INDEED!! No wonder I liked said gift so much! I certainly wouldn't mind taking that mask OFF his person...

Thank you! I've just been getting back into traditional media after doing a lot of digital lately, and it seems like it's really helped me improve with color in general. Glad you like it!

Your watercolors look like copics for me
Just want to say "More Pirossa" But he is not Pirossa
Cruel Temiel makes Pirossa's fans cry

temiel In reply to sionra [2010-03-28 20:39:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's awesome! I wish I had some Copics, it'd make this process a WHOLE lot faster. Brushes are SLOW! XD

And no... no, he's not Pirossa. I'm terrible for not drawing him more often... but I'm also not a huge masochist, which is why I don't.

Yay, thank you!! I'm glad you like it, I wasn't sure at first how he was going to come out because I mixed warm and cool in the shadows too much. -__- But! In the end, I think he turned out okay. :3

PhantasmMarquesses In reply to temiel [2010-03-28 20:41:46 +0000 UTC]

I think he turned out great! Its hard to get the shading down right when you work on characters of a different color. But I think you managed to do a really great job on it I can see where you would be nervous about the mixing of the colors and what not in particular areas, but I like it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to PhantasmMarquesses [2010-03-28 20:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks! There were places I wanted to make the shading deeper, but I was worried about ruining the integrity of the paper if I used too much more water. It's the downside of using bristol for everything, it doesn't take really heavy watercolor too well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantasmMarquesses In reply to temiel [2010-03-28 21:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh I completely understand. Its like working on cardstock, you can only erase so much before the paper is useless or you have eatin a hole through the paper

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to PhantasmMarquesses [2010-03-28 21:19:13 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe, I know how that goes! I've gotten to that point on Rives BFK paper before, which is a total shame because that's good stuff... it just can't take shading and blending and shading and blending and shading and blending and shading and blending and shading and...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantasmMarquesses In reply to temiel [2010-03-28 21:25:29 +0000 UTC]

LMAO!
The fact that you do it with something other than colored pencil just floors me! II use the colored pencils and it makes things so much easier and with a magic rub eraser I can pick the darkest shades up if I don't like it
So I worship you

temiel In reply to PhantasmMarquesses [2010-03-28 21:30:09 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, if I were better at shading in the first place I wouldn't have that problem.
