Description ATC made for the weekly challenge at #ATC-Exchange , "Blue". At first I wasn't sure if I liked this because it's just... a portrait with very little going on, but I really liked doing the monochrome. Plus, I always like drawing a pretty face.

Good LORD I need to do more with my Prismas. I love them so.

2.5"x3.5", Micron, watercolor, and Prisma pencil.

I LOVE doing watercolor with ATCs. Out of random curiosity, have you ever tried making an ATC? 2.5"x3.5" piece of paper, original traditional piece, they're really small so they take almost no time at all (most of these take me under an hour). If you've never tried it, I recommend it, it's a really fun exercise. Getting involved with the #ATC-Exchange group has been SO much fun, and it's really gratifying to be able to bang out these finished pieces so quickly. When I take a really long time on a piece and I'm only making one at a time, I feel SO uninspired and unproductive, but doing little things like this helps keep the flow going.

Thank you so much, I'm really glad you like this one. :3 He's definitely got a bit of a smolder going on, so I don't think it's just you.

Oh, they certainly seem fun, especially with all the exchange between different artists in the group! My only problem is that I know NOTHING of traditional colouring. T_T I really, really love watercolours - waaay more than digital - but I can't learn them for the life of me, so I get kind of... scared of participating in these things.

Aww, don't worry. Honestly, a lot of our members joined and then didn't do exchanges for a while until they were confident enough with traditional to do work for the others. The whole thing is extremely low-pressure, you don't ever have to sign up for an exchange if you don't feel like it, and the weekly things are totally optional (although I've found they're a convenient excuse to practice traditional stuff ).

Watercolor can take some practice in the beginning, but *Gold-Seven 's series of tutorials is really good: [link] I strongly recommend trying it out, you might be surprised how good it looks already. I used to be dreadful at watercolors, but after switching to digital for a while and then coming back to them I was amazed how much better I was just from having worked in a different medium for so long. Ditto with going back to digital after doing a watercolor, you take a lot of the knowledge with you.

I think blue is a color that suits very much with Farael! It makes me think of elegance and melancholy Great work with watercolors as always

Exactly! I've ALWAYS associated blue with him, most likely because of the blue coat, but like you said, it's elegant and refined and a little somber too, so I think it's a good fit. Glad you like it!

Thank you thank you thank you! I'm really glad you like it, I really wanted it to be a somewhat more somber or "expressive" picture, I guess.

Thank you! My favorite colors tend to be the warm ones, but I definitely have a soft spot for blue since I've always associated it with Farael. So he was a natural choice for this one... I'm glad you like how it came out!

No, I kid. Honestly, without that awesome red hair it's harder to recognize him. OR tell him apart from Zarael, really, they look disturbingly alike. XD (Then again, it IS genetic, so I think I have an excuse. )

I might've told you before (I know I told someone), but when Farael was younger, Trean made him keep his hair short because when he grew it out he looked too much like his daddy for comfort.

Thank you! In all fairness I did use several different shades of blue, but the tonal variation is all in the amount of water you use. Glad you like it!

Ffff, I can't, I REFUSE, to believe this is on such a small card .____. It looks so good, I love the background especially and how intense Farael's eyes are in comparison to all the blue.

temiel In reply to Dwenda [2010-05-22 12:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Mrnrrr, you should see it in real life, it looks TONS better due to that stupid scanner effect that makes my traditional art look like grainy crap. Thank you though! I'm really glad you like it.

Sighter [2010-05-22 03:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Mono-blue is always awesome to see. Loverly!

Nice pensive feel going on too, the portrait and the color feel like complement each other well too. Also gotta admire the amount of detail (since I'm a detail hog too). Plus the way you do these tiny watercolor/prismas always come out well!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to Sighter [2010-05-22 12:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I actually didn't think there'd be much opportunity for detail in this since it's a really simple composition, but it did come out surprisingly complex-looking.

I seriously love doing these things. When I do larger traditional media pieces I tend to get bored quickly because they're time-consuming and the setup is messy, but these I can just bang out in an hour or two if they're REALLY detailed, like the icon one.

I've been using them much more frequently lately (since having any impetus to do traditional work, that is ). There was a long time-- maybe almost a year-- when I didn't use them AT ALL!! The sorrow! But I'm rediscovering how much I love them and, more importantly, WHY I used to use them as my go-to medium, even though I prefer blending them with watercolors now.

I'm really glad you like how this turned out, it was a fun little thing to do this afternoon.

I am hoping that for my birthday I get the Prisma Markers and what not so I can try my hand at crafting with those, though I think colored pencils are my go-to because of how I hold my utensil and that I know how to control what I want out of it. Mark is one messy step up for me...watercolor? would be all over me like white on rice.

I really am proud of how it turned out. Your work with mixed media is great!!

temiel In reply to PhantasmMarquesses [2010-05-22 01:14:34 +0000 UTC]

I have just a couple Prisma markers, a few of the grays. They work pretty well, but markers are pretty tough for me. Weirdly, it feels like I get better control with a brush. In general, though, I prefer something with a point, it makes my life a LOT easier.
