Description I was waiting for the train when I noticed this man and his dog. The dog was so adorable, and chewing on a huge bone. I asked if I could take a picture and he said 'sure' - and he joked about his dog becoming famous one day.

She refused to look at me and was only interested in her bone. The owner kept telling her to look at me, and tried to shove her head towards the camera.

I took a couple of pictures before the train came, but these were the first pics on the roll, and I stupidly didn't click the first few frames, so they didn't come out - doh!

Anyway, here we have both owner and dog, just before the doors closed.

Ilford XP2 400 (I love this film!), Nikon EM

great shot, love the composition and especially the way man turned out, his pose, face expression... i know you're shooting with 350D, but this shot seemed odd, i could swear it was real b&w film judging by grain, tonality, details in highlight...so i read the description and realized it actually really is film!

btw, have you ever tried non-C41 ilfords? delta, hp5+? great stuff...

It's funny how when you start to use film you can differentiate between the quality of film and digital right away
Yes, I've used fp4 plus but that's about it - a couple of examples:
[link] and [link]

Lovely film - I should use that again, and I should probably try some other Ilford films as well. Any particular recommendations?

great shots!

my favourite is ilford's delta, i most often get 400 and use it like that or push it to 1600 or 3200 for night time shooting. you can do wonders with film that fast.
anyway, it's got really small grain, even in standard developers, and amazing tonality!
for e.g.: [link] at iso 800
[link] at 1600
[link] at 3200

then you have hp5+. it's a film that's just wonderful to push. for e.g.:
at iso 100:
[link]
at 400:
[link]
[link]
at 1600:
[link]
[link]
(the film i used is efke KB400 which is same as hp5+, just under different name)

have you seen the range of tonality these films reproduce? (and those are just cheap scans)

the thing about FP4 is that it's not really B&W as you develop it in color chemicals, it has barely detectable sepia toning. (try converting "OK then" for e.g. into B&W and comparing it.)

it's not that big of a thing until you notice it for the first time. then it bugs you (:
i used to shoot kodak tmax 400CN (kodak's equivalent of FP4) but not anymore.

Thanks for your indepth reply - I'm a bit confused though. fp4 isn't c41 black and white and you're saying it is? Only Ilford's XP2 is processed like colour film is, as far as I know - fp4 is just regular b&w film!
400CN is Kodak's equivalent of XP2, not FP4

hmm... you're right, i mixed xp2 and fp4. i don't really use neither, so i guess i tend to mix them up. slight sepia on the dog-shot misled me, but it's probably only the scanner.

Ahh - for a sec I was all confused!
Great shots there btw - I love b&w film. I'm going to experiment some more with Ilford's film but also Tri-x.

i wish you had judged over just a bit further to the right. i love the texture of the seats.. they look like shattered glass.

Yeah I agree - it was a spontaneous shot though - didn't have much time to move across. Thanks for the comment.

This picture seems much more authentic than your description of the "posed dog" pictures. Not because of the dog, but because you managed to establish a connection between you the man while taking pictures of his dog.
