The Kappa are creatures from Japanese folklore and can be found throughout Japan. The Kappa are a complex race of creatures, running the range from harmless and amicable to mischievous and vicious. The more friendly Kappa are known to frolic with swimmers, tell stories and engage in sumo wrestling with those who challenge them. They are said to adore cucumber. The more aggressive Kappa range from mostly-harmless pranksters to powerful predators who will drown humans, rape women and sometimes devour people. Some are known to even remove a previously unknown organ, called a shirikodama, from a victim's anus. Kappa can be severely weakened if the dish on their head is emptied of water, something clever humans can exploit to gain an advantage over them. Some will even serve a human forever if said person is kind enough to refill the dish.

The most notable encounter with a Kappa occurred in 1660 in the Edo period. A renowned travelling swordsman was logging his journey across Japan when he encountered a group of Kappa who were terrorizing a small village. The swordsman then spent the next few days battling against the Kappa in an effort to stop their assault. He was eventually successful and slayed the rogue creatures, being seen as a hero by the people of the region.
