Description The exams will start in a few days and I am learning very hard. But saturday evening isn't the right time for learning, agree? That's what I thought so I thought I deserved some time for doing that what I love to do.

I took my bike and I headed to the Boulevard of Vlissingen. I wanted to shoot something else than 'just a beach'. As I was riding on my bike the wind started to blow harder en harder. When I arrived wind speed had increased to 8 Beaufort and waves were crashing up against the wave breakers, the dyke and the boulevard. When I was standing on this pier the wind came from the left so I stood next to my camera to prevent it from shaking. It was simply impossible to switch lenses because drops of salt water were filling the air. I was glad I had my rain pants with me.
Anyway, the city you see here is Vlissingen, a nice city with a nice boulevard. I prefer just regular beaches above boulevards, but this boulevard has a perfect ambiance and isn't as classy as Boulevards in other countries with Casino's etc.

It was hard to find a good composition. Of course I could take a picture of the pier right in the middle of the frame with the sea behind it (I did that) but it looked a bit boring to me. The clouds were moving rather fast heading towards me as I was looking to the little lighthouse. I thought that if I took a exposure that would be long enough the clouds would create perfect lines to it. I tightened up my aperture to f/22 and turned my polarizer. I was able to get the water incredibly light. But after taking one shot I decided to get the water a little more dark for some more contrast with the railing of the pier.
I know the pier doesn't really suite the composition. On one hand it creates a in my opinion good foreground, but on the other hand it point totally out of the picture so the composition isn't balanced any more. I thought I could crop it to square, but I think I liked it best this way.

After I was done with my shooting and it was getting real dark I had to walk quite a distance back to my bike. In the meanwhile the wind has increased more and more and I it was quite a struggle to get back to my bike. When I got to my bike I decided to ride to the cinema, which is approximately 200m further, to get some rest in the lee.

I darkened the sky in lightroom (I still haven't bought me ND-grads, but I'm still sure I need them) and corrected the white balance. After that I did a standard B&W Preset and I was done!

i really like this shot, and i do for a couple of reasons:

the most obvious and best park of this picture is the very well done B&W, the contrast, especially on the fence here is just perfect, the pure white on nigh pure black. and it doesn't come with a loss of detail.

the composition also appeals to me, there seems to be a very nice balance, and there is a lot of detail in the shot, without the shot being cluttered or distracting. there is a very clear subject (the walkway/fence), which looks great, but it does more that that, it guides the eye to some of the detail, but most importantly, it offsets the centered position of the church, which is a secondary subject. and that object is again accentuated by the streaks in the clouds.

just as the walkway balances the scene, so does the negative space on the left, it gives a sense of space to the shot, focuses the attention on the detail, and again ofsets the centered position of the church.

in conclusion i really do like the shot. if i'd have to give some negative points (it is a critique after all, not just a praise) i'd mention how the church is kinda dark, the two wed walkwayboards being so dark, and there might be a bit to much clutter on the right with the detail of the walkway intersecting the already busy cityscape.

I totally need/want some nd grads, and maybe a regular nd filter too. Especially with warm weather on its way.

I like that too. The light gets broken by the blades of the diaphragm.

Professioneel gedaan man!

The contrast in this shot is just amazing Martijn! You got the movement of the clouds just right, they add such depth to the shot! Very difficult composition, I can totally see your point but to be honest it doesn't bother me. It's such a beautiful BW!

Very nice exposure and lighting but the composition isn't very pleasing. My eye cant seem to move from the pillar in the middle of the screen
