Description Sketch card featuring Han Solo from The Empire Strikes Back, right before he whips out his blaster and starts shooting at his future father-in-law. I always wonder what in blazes they all talked about over lunch...

This is great, I love the expression and you did a fantastic job with the colouring - I especially like the purple shading.

The purple was one of those happy accidents. I'm glad it works! Thank you so much for your comments.

Like someone else said, the eyes are a bit off. But I still like the overall expression a lot. Just the right amount of "uh-oh". And your artist's comment made me giggle. Yeah I always wondered what they talked about at lunch, too.
Or what Han looked like when Leia told him about her dad.

SvenjaLiv In reply to Steffel [2012-01-23 13:56:42 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I think they're a bit too big and too far "up". But I'm glad you like it anyway!

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at that lunch... See, the Skywalker family would be hell to marry into, wouldn't it? Imagine if Vader had lived and Han had to ask him for Leia's hand or something, her being a princess and all.

Steffel In reply to SvenjaLiv [2012-01-30 22:50:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Vader probably would have to get over his resentment of smugglers (can't be too keen on having a rogue for his son-in-law), but then... I can almost see it. "Just call me dad."
Awkward but so much fun!

SvenjaLiv In reply to Steffel [2012-02-02 19:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, that would be hilarious. And can you imagine Vader giving Leia away at her wedding...

Now that would pretty much kill the mood. Maybe one of the flower girls could help to make Vader look more cheery.

I think I've seen better of Han Solo from you. This is still good, but his face looks a bit smushed, most noticably in the eyes. Either you had them at the right space then ended up making them bigger than you meant to (which has happened to me more than once), or you accidently drew them too close together. This isn't bad, but I think I just see a funtime sketch in here, not really something you put most of your effort into.

SvenjaLiv In reply to TheNameIsWater-Wea [2011-12-30 20:58:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, thanks for the feedback! You're right, I think. It's one of the challenges drawing this small, if you're off by less than a millimeter everything winds up looking weird. Thanks so much for your insight, I'll definitely keep it in mind for the next try!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheNameIsWater-Wea In reply to SvenjaLiv [2011-12-31 03:29:15 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I always try to give insight when I see it. I can understand the dilema with drawing small... I actually think I've lost the ability to. =/

I guess you may not really realize that I'm always giving tips because usually my tips are, picture reference! Well, you always have one. XD While I know it offends some people, I'm glad it doesn't for you, because I really like your art and it's good for you to know you have some wiggle room to get better. I feel like if people don't want any critiques on their art they don't want to get better. Now, critiques and flat out hatred are two different things, but I would hate to simply just get praise all the time. I know I tend to from my constant watchers, but they always try to point out something they really like about the piece, and not just say something so generalized as, 'great!'

Wow... I just rambled without realizing it... Woops. XD

SvenjaLiv In reply to TheNameIsWater-Wea [2012-01-02 11:57:11 +0000 UTC]

Nah, you might get out of practice, but I don't think you ever lose an ability.

Eh, critique never offends me! It's good to know there's still room for improvement, otherwise I might as well quit. *lol* I prefer "I like it, but you could improve X" to "omg awesome" as well, though of course critique always takes more time and it's not something everyone can do. I really appreciate it, though. I guess critique is something you have to get used to. Takes time to learn that "you could improve X" doesn't mean "Grr you suck". *lol* And don't worry about rambling either.

TheNameIsWater-Wea In reply to SvenjaLiv [2012-01-04 21:41:59 +0000 UTC]

Lol. Yeah, I used to hate critiques. In one of my earliest drawings my brother and brother-in-law both said that my wolf looked like a horse. I'd put backmarkings on it's neck, and they thought that was a mane. XP I've learned how to handle critiques a lot better now. It's great to know someone else on dA shares my opinion about critiques now, too, because while some people seem to appreciate it, sometimes they get defensive and stuff.

Did you know that you're really easy to type to?

SvenjaLiv In reply to TheNameIsWater-Wea [2012-01-05 16:50:44 +0000 UTC]

I think critique is something you grow into. When I was younger, my mother had to be really careful about criticising my work. Nowadays when she does, I'll usually agree with her straightaway. *lol* I think if you want to get better at anything, you need people to tell you what you're doing wrong and how you can do it better. But you're right, lots of people seem to see it as an attack. I've become careful about who I'll give critique to. Always better to check if they actually want it, first, or they might end up yelling at you.

I did not know that! But that's good to know. Same goes for you, by the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheNameIsWater-Wea In reply to SvenjaLiv [2012-01-07 19:02:58 +0000 UTC]

haha! I usually don't check, just apologize if I offend them in my immediate message, also let them know that it's not an attack, just advice. XD Yeah, I used to always take offense to any critique, just like you said, but I've also grown into it.

Really? Thanks! It's great to have someone around who shares my opinions.

SvenjaLiv In reply to TheNameIsWater-Wea [2012-01-13 20:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's usually best to just apologise and walk away, I think. I used to get really annoyed at my mother. By now I tend to criticise myself more than she does though. *lol*

Yeah, really! I completely agree.
