I'd love to learn how to do that, painting from life is just something that amazes me! I never get the colors right.. the shapes meh, lol.
After a couple of hours my brain (or eye - I don't know) turns lazy and I see everything greenish, like in matrix, especially when I work with warm tints.

Well I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge

Cheers,
an anomalous trichromat that loves to paint digitally.

Really nice. Nice to see that all you can do with four brushes. Good job.

I'd like to second this since you've pointed out a belief I hold firm - master two or three brushes.  Do as much as you can with them, then move on to a new tool if necessary.

Some people seem to think it's all about using 100 different brushes when it's really about knowing how to use just a few and having solid fundamentals.

This looks amazing. How did you render the whole thing with the candle melting on you?

Suzanne-Helmigh In reply to AnnickHuber [2013-06-02 21:01:13 +0000 UTC]

needed more than one candle
It's important to get the lighting and colors right in the beginning so you can focus on getting the shapes perfect later when the later is possibly changed.

What is the purpose of linking a layer to the bottom layer? Thank you for the tutorial, beautiful piece.

Yeah in this case it's not to important, but sometimes I work on a bigger canvas, with room on the side to test stuff, kinda like a traditional painter would do. it also comes in handy when you work with characters and want the layers to stick to the character only.

Aphelps In reply to Suzanne-Helmigh [2013-03-20 20:17:30 +0000 UTC]

So if you link the layers and then make it to where it will only draw on the area of the bottom layer, it will only color on that area without having to make a selection? Is that what you mean?

Nice! I love the lighting. Did you work from a photograph or from life? (If from life that would be a heck of a trick getting the match to stay there for 6 hours XD)

Suzanne-Helmigh In reply to Varethane [2013-03-20 12:28:16 +0000 UTC]

From life the matches were no problem, they look close to the fire but they are actually not too close.
Refreshing the candle is another thing XD

Awesome study.I understand clip masks...but I still don't understand what the link feature in layers do. What's it for?
