Well choosing a skin color has a lot to do with the person's surrounding.
When you make a character sheet its not really a problem because the surrounding is plain, and you can go for any lighting that feels good and emphasis the right shapes.
When you do work in an environment you have to think about the lighting a lot. There are several tricks to make sure your character blends well with its surrounding. First of all, the light source/direction must be correct, second, sometimes there's a lot of bounce light going on and that gives rather shiny skin the colors of its clothing. (person wears red sweater, the redness of that swear is shown under its chin and nose, for example).
You can start out with just the regular skin tones like in this tutorial, and use color layers to blend things in the same color as its surrounding. (the color and saturation tool on a soft light modus)
Hope to have helped out a little ^^

do you know an alternative sotution to mirror images for see mistakes?
This doesn't work with me.
The rest of tutorial is useful, especially the B/W note. I will try it next time.

I ask my little brother. He doesn't like me, so I get brutally honest critique. xD (He typically says things like "This doesn't look right at all!" and then he explains.)
So, get someone to hate you, and ask them what's wrong. They'll be looking for anything they can think of. xD

How come the mirror trick doesn't work for you?
The second best thing is to have others critique it, this could be friends or family, or people on DA.. or me ^^
Point is, you have been working on your artwork for a long time to make it look as awesome as is but it will cause a blindness to mistakes that new eyes will see right away. This doesn't necessarily have to be people with a lot of knowledge about anatomy perspective or art.

Very helpful!
Can I ask you a few questions regarding brushes?:
What do you mean by hard round, soft square, square texture etc.? Are these all the brushes that come with the default Photoshop? I generally use the very first, hard round brush (I got that one) in the default list for everything...

Suzanne-Helmigh In reply to Militant-Jester [2010-12-31 10:56:55 +0000 UTC]
The hard and soft round brush are in the default brush pack.
With soft I meant with soft edges. The square and textured brushes are custom made onces.
A square brush with cracks in it or one that leaves a painterly effect will do.
I bet there are some people here on DA which had put those online, otherwise you could make some youself ^^

Alright, thank you very much for the clarification!
I have downloaded several custom brushes but for some reason photoshop seems to go through every few weeks and remove of all them... it doesn't make any sense D: should probably look at that one of these days XD

aiai :S Do save them on a second location than.
Also when photoshop asks you if you want to replace brushes, do so.. otherwise they will disappear.
