I usually imagine it working like this:
In the middle of the altar is a pool of Corruption/Crimson water. After putting in all the ingredients for something, they float towards each other and fuse. Sometimes they glow and then morph together, like with the Night's Edge. Your idea is also really cool though!

in fucking mobile it takes a while the game glitches out so now I have one with my badass hamdrax. The wall of flesh takes a long time for me to come out with a strategy. I worry about collecting. I trying to find a dragon hat! in the jungle it is that simple.

You only need a solar eclipse, which happens rarely during after defeating Plantera

Actually, a solar eclipse has a chance to happen after defeating the 3 mech bosses, killing plantera simply adds more mob types.

Try using golden shower on destroyer, and then get chlorophyte as soon as possible. Once you have souls of might, use megashark, beat the other mechs, and THEN fight plantera. He's a real bitch.
