Description Vector Fox, to go with Vector Owl and hopefully eventually spawn a whole series of Vectors Animals.

Giclee print available on Etsy: www.etsy.com/listing/90177084/…

Greeting card set of 5 available on Etsy: www.etsy.com/listing/55994044/…

Inspired by my recent trip to Estonia - the wintry birch forests, and a fox or two unconcernedly crossing the main highway somewhere in front of our car.

Done in Adobe Illustrator. I think I failed to save the latest changes in the original file, too.

This poster is now available on Ebay: www.ebay.com/usr/4fro4o

EDIT: I'm still working on getting some more vector animals done (I *have* started, yes I did!) -- but look, I've inspired someone else! Isoflow sends this along:

Grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it! Beautiful design. So eloquent .
Have to admit I'm partial to foxes. was granted a wonderful gift one night as my Marshal and I were returning home after spending the evening in Atlanta. "Bout 3:00am, a fox danced for me. I saw her twirling one her hind legs in a spot light for a park. Sure she was probably snapping at insects attracted by the light, but it was a lovely and joyeous sight, Thanks for the reminder,

Thank you! It's inspired by a trip to Estonia (my mother's birth country) a couple of years ago. We saw a couple of foxes nonchalantly walk across the motorway! I think it's something of a national animal there.

No, really - it's been all over my journal, for months! No excuses.

Stunning picture! The composition is very striking. I love your bold use of shape and line. I especially like the markings on the trees and the shape of the fox's mouth.

Thanks! I'm still following your "Dead man's curse"... I don't think I'd ever have the patience to stick with a project for that amount of time! I like to try lots of different things. Haven't done much work with Lightwave lately -- at the moment it's all designing websites -- but I hope I'll find the time to properly dig into it, uh, maybe in a year or so. :sigh: By then my version will be totally outdated.

I've been enjoying doing some work with Illustrator lately, though. It doesn't take quite so much time to reach a finished image!

Keep working at the website design, have been watching your progress. So is the business side working for you at the moment?

3D is rather time consuming. It's partly persistance and determination that keeps it going as well as feedback it has to go somewhere ultimately.

Well, I need to come up with a next paying client sometime soon... though there is not a lack of work, I'm working on my friend Inkibus's site for free at the moment (it will be a nice addition to my portfolio) -- and my own website sorely needs a million updates.... so... well, these things take time.

I did get paid for the first three websites I built for other people - perhaps not exactly market rates, but still reasonably decent money - so I suppose I can't complain! Most people seem to spend quite a bit of time building sites for free when they first start out.

3D is nice but when I think about what it would involve doing it full time professionally - I think I'm happier building websites! It's still a good skill to have, and besides, websites can be pretty much anything, so I'm sure I'll be able to use my 3D skills in this line of work eventually as well!

Voltarrens In reply to Starsong-Studio [2009-10-07 01:27:20 +0000 UTC]

Hope you find some more paying clients.

Have you tried community groups?

From what I can remember, helping to maintain a website you've designed for someone is where the on going money comes in & the word of mouth too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starsong-Studio In reply to Voltarrens [2009-10-07 07:26:26 +0000 UTC]

Community groups? Aren't that the people who always need to have everything done for free?

Here in NZ at least, that would be the expectation. Don't you DARE ask getting paid for your work!

Yes, I'm very much counting on the word of mouth factor... but I guess I'll need to build a few sites for that to kick in! And repeat customers, yeah. Gotta keep them happy!

Anyways... better fire up Dreamweaver now!

Yes, it's a nice subdued colour scheme - and one you really find in northern Europe in winter! The sky is subtle hue of orange though which goes with the colour of the fox.

Brillianttt
I'm super jealous that you have the thought to pick out colors like that because I would just pick out random colors that look good together without thinking about how it would affect the overall image :/
so kudos to you

Starsong-Studio In reply to m4raa [2009-09-20 22:47:51 +0000 UTC]

Ohhhh Arrrr welllhmmm... guess that's what I used to do too... I think with digital stuff you kind of have to think more about your colour schemes, because you literally pick them off the colour wheel, and you've got the entire spectrum to choose from, not just the limited amount of tubes or pots of paint or pencils that you get when you work with traditional media.

Or something.

I'm sure you give me too much credit here! But thanks.

and since I'm taking AP2D/Studio art, my teacher is going to be more strict in my color schemes so I have to start really paying attention ahaha

Oh a foxie! This is really cool, I'm sure a series of animals like this will appeal to people.

Starsong-Studio In reply to dragonladych [2009-09-18 22:16:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm trying to figure out what the next animal should be: rooster? badger? salamander? frog? bee? mackerel? jellyfish? Do I want to include extinct animals such as dragons, unicorns and phoenixes?

Any suggestions?

Maybe I should take commissions for this...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonladych In reply to Starsong-Studio [2009-09-19 12:41:58 +0000 UTC]

Depends on what you want to do. Maybe you could do several series?
One with "cute" animals (that always works best); one with "mythcal" beasts, etc...
So far you've gone with "classical" european fauna, logically a badger would fit in. Then you could also use oceanic fauna for another series.
Too many ideas

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starsong-Studio In reply to dragonladych [2009-09-19 13:07:35 +0000 UTC]

Too many series, too little time!

Nah, I don't want to do too many "cute" animals. More like, animals that appear in fables and fairytales and such, perhaps? The owl and the fox certainly do. Who else? The rooster, rabbit, mouse, wolf ...lion... snake... ??

I was wondering if I should ask for commissions/suggestions in my journal, but I know I know, everyone will want me to do cute animals, cats and dogs and horses and such. Maybe I'll do a horse, but I draw the line at cats and dogs!
Or the other idea would be to move through the, what are they called, classes? So now I've got a bird and a mammal, so the next one should be a reptile, fish, and so on...

Awww well, at the end of the day I'll just do whatever I feel like I guess.

Wow, this is absolutely cool! The trunk of the birches creates a nice effect too, very much like the fox's run, I'd imagine. First try with vector? You should definitely do more of this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starsong-Studio In reply to starrynienna [2009-09-18 10:13:50 +0000 UTC]

No, I've done a couple of other images in Illustrator. Used to take part in the childrensillustrators club for a while here on DA. Have you seen my Vector Owl? (in the Illustration folder in my gallery).
Yeah, I've sort of taken to Illustrator a bit - it makes nice clean lines, which is just the opposite from how I draw by hand, so it allows me to do things that are quite different from how I usually paint.

I think I'll make a little series of Vector animals...

BTW - how is the Illustartist site going? I should really send you some new work to update my gallery, should not I?
