Description But oh! Those summer nights!

I used to love Grease as a kid. These days, it's not in my list of favourites anymore (though I would love seeing a good onstage production of it) – but the music remains, in my opinion, fantastic. Even after listening to it thousands of times, I still think Summer Nights is a fun song.

This is of course inspired by the movie but mostly drawn from memory, I didn't really try to make them look like the actors. Heck, I don't even know if the T-Bird in the stripey shirt is supposed to be Doody or Sonny. (Actually, I can't really tell Doody and Sonny apart in any circumstances.) Coloured with Copics.

Grease is not mine.

Hahaha!  Yeah, so... confession:  I hate Grease, as a story.  Haaaaate it.  But the music is SO DARN CATCHY!  What can you do, eh?  I love the little bubbles of their different versions of the summer.  Super cute!

I can understand where you're coming from... I didn't get it as a kid, but looking at the movie now, the story's indeed a bit awful... Change yourself for a man and live happily ever after! Sigh. But yeah, the music. I keep returning to it and never seem to get fed up with it, it's just so catchy!

Yeah...and not only change, but act super trashy and pretend to (or actually) reject your own sexual morals.  Le sigh.  And there's the whole "omg is Rizzo pregnant?  No?  Phew, then she can go back to having unprotected sex, whee!" thing.  The stage play is worse, really.  The movie tried to make it a little cuter/sweeter, and removed a lot of the swearing and the girls pretty much ALL using men.

Yep. :/ I've seen a (bad) production of the stage version, and it was kind of awful all the way through... The movie at least doesn't take itself too seriously, with the car flying away at the end and whatnot. But the stage version... Ugh. One of the worst nights at the theatre of my life. It didn't even manage to be funny!

I was traumatized after my high school put on the play -- musical -- er -- UGH it was a disaster!  Normally, we put on a play in the fall and a musical in the spring.  In theory, it was the "junior class play" and the "senior class musical," and precedence was given to people in those grades to act the leading roles.

After missing the first play my freshman fall, I participated in each production I could.  But in my junior year, our fall play was "Grease."  The key word being "play."  For some ungodly reason, the director had decided that the show was SO popular (after all, most of the teenagers around my age really liked it) that we could just go ahead and perform it... as a play.  No songs.  No music.  Whaaaat?

So, then we had try-outs.  Most of the usual theater crowd didn't try out...buuut most of the somewhat nasty popular kids did.  One of the school secretaries was very much against us putting on the play because she found it offensive, but instead of talking to us, she decided to just call the company that gave permission to perform it, and tell them what the director was planning to do.  The end result was that the company said no, you must perform it exactly as written.  Our director put it to a vote, and of course the cast said that yes, they would still go ahead with it, and no, they didn't want to hold new tryouts.  So, now we had a cast that for the most part couldn't sing.

The kids just stepped all over the director.  In spring, our director was always the director of the community theater, and he could always keep us in hand, but in fall, the director was a local parent, and she just wasn't good at making executive decisions.  By the end of things, the cast was all smoking herbal cigarettes onstage, and constantly ad-libbing really crude comments.  The one really nice guy dropped out of the cast to run the musical pit instead -- thank goodness, because it was absolutely necessary *someone* take control of the musicians, but on the other hand, there was no one left on the cast to hang out with.  I ended up cast as "Miss Lynch," the horrible nagging teacher.  All I remember about my role is that I was carried bodily offstage during "The Hand-Jive."

Well, that, and the herbal smoke made me feel really ill -- it sort of stuck around in a cloud backstage, smelling vaguely like marijuana and vaguely like someone had burned vegetables in the kitchen.

...wow. That sounds like one awful experience. I've never been a part of any high school play or musicals, but you'd think a good director would be the most important thing there, to hold the production together... Ugh.

But wow, seriously, Grease as a straight play..? How could that ever work?

Thankfully, the world will never know!

On the up side, I was in the chorus of "Dracula: the Musical?," "Dames at Sea," and "Snoopy: the Musical," and in the plays "Peter Pan" and "Up the Down Staircase," as well.

Okay, so I'd like to forget "Dames at Sea" exists, but that's just because it's a crappy piece of theater.  All the rest were *wonderful* experiences!

Oo, sweet! Dracula the Musical, the Frank Wildhorn one? I love the music! I've been listening to the German cast recording lots and lots.

No, though I found that one once when *looking* for the one I did!  I'm excited to hear the Wildhorn one, though.  :-D  Ours was "Dracula: the Musical?" with a ?, and it was a bit of comedic dinner theater.  Really, really funny.  I adored it.  I can't really find much more about it online, though -- it's such a small-scale production, and it's not exactly filled with show-stoppers, just fluff.

Ah, I see – sounds pretty nice! I have heard the Wildhorn one is not too good script-wise, though the music's good... So who knows, maybe yours was a more enjoyable experience!

This piece is absolutely fantastic! Not only do I adore your art style, but there is also so much colour and life displayed within your artwork; the movie's essence is portrayed in this piece.

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words!! I guess it was possible for me to portray the movie's essence, as you say, only because I watched it so obsessively when I was a kid... I could watch it multiple times the same day!

So cute! I was in a high school production of Grease, and I've got to say that you can tell supporting characters apart a lot more easily in that version but the story is even more morally questionable. At least there's more music!

This is so well done! I used to love this musical as a kid, too. I dressed up as Sandy when I was 5 for Halloween (I don't think anyone knew who I was...).
