Description

The motes are silicon-based microorganisms that form sapient swarms, and are likely descended from a previous civilization's nanomachines. Motes are the native intelligent life on the Mu Construct, a highly advanced alien megastructure enveloping the wandering orange dwarf star Mu. The Construct allows the motes to control the speed and trajectory of their home star and therefore the remaining planet in its system, Amu. Mu and its motes arrived on the edge of known space in the early 3000s CE, and within another five hundred years they were gone again, allowing the USSC only a relatively brief period of time to study and interact with Mu and the motes.

It's Sophontember in the SOPHONT-FORGE group, and while I wasn't able to get yesterday's prompt (MACHINE) done in time I realized I could combine it with today's prompt (DUSTY) and work on the motes from the Diaspora universe! So it's a two-fer, lol.

I've had the idea for these microscopic eldritch soccer balls kicking around in my head for a while, but couldn't find the right place to put them until I read up on the concept of stellar engines and fell in love with the idea of a microbial swarming sophont species who used the power of their own sun to sail through the cosmos. They didn't fit with the existing lore of Astra Planeta, but it made sense that they could show up after the main canon-era.

I'm really excited for the rest of Sophontember; hopefully I'll be able to keep up and take the opportunity to design and flesh out the lore for many of my lesser-loved species!

Thanks! I can’t recall exactly how I came up with the idea, but I’m pretty sure the nano-cloud from the podcast The Strange Case of Starship Iris was a major inspiration. As for machine self-evolution, it seems fairly sensible to me that any Von Neumann system would experience some degree of Darwinian evolution given that any replication system is subject to errors.

Thank you! Their locomotion system is poorly understood, even after centuries of study. Initial theories, before they were observed to move in vacuum, ranged from electrohydrodynamic propulsion to tightly controlled supermagnetism. Since they have equal precision of motion even in vacuum with no external magnetic field to move in, however, many are beginning to suspect each mote has some sort of internal reactionless motion system, like an orientable Mach effect thruster or even a microscopic Alcubierre bubble drive.

Wow, that sounds great. Machine life and other synthetics arent common in spec, does anything else like them live on the Mu construct ?

They, along with the sedentary hyper-intelligent computers that line the rings of the Construct, are the only documented β€œorganisms” on the Construct itself. The planet Amu (which orbits the star the motes use to power their stellar engine) appears to host some form of native biosphere, but USSC representatives haven’t been permitted to orbit the mysterious world, much less land an expeditionary force.
