Description Hahhh! I always meant to make another one of these eventually. Seems I finally got around to doing it. xD

New and improved (in my opinion) Pernese dragon size chart. I'm just pleased with the proportions and everything more this time around. In case it's not clear, the dragons on the chart are:

Gold (45 ft)
Bronze (42 ft)
Brown (35 ft)
Blue (30 ft)
Green (25 ft)
White (18 ft)

There is a problem with the sizes that you have given. The sizes should be in meters. Here are what they should actually be according to pages 36 and 39 of the Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern by Jody Lynn Nye and Anne MaCaffrey -

Colour    Body Length

Green    20 - 25 meters

Blue      25 - 30 meters

Brown   30 - 35 meters

Bronze  35 - 38 meters

Gold     38 - 42 meters

Ramoth as the largest ever dragon to hatch on pern was closer 45 meters. To put that in perspective she was almost as long as an L 1011 Tristar but had a greater wingspan. The other major exception in this period was Ruth, the white dragon. Said to be a throwback to the size of the original dragons. He is also the only dragon who's size is given in feet (20 to be precise) in the DLG2P.

Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to write out your opinion of my work. I appreciate every comment I get and I am interested to know your thoughts on the correct way to portray the size of fictional alien dragons. Adding bolded and italicized text was also helpful for promoting my understanding of this most important subject, as I otherwise might have completely understood the meaning of your message. Please feel free to comment again with more important insights on how I am allowed to enjoy this particular interest!

There is a simple reason why I commented on this work. The quality of it means that there are people that I have come across who are taking what you have produced as canon when it is not. I therefore used the bold/etc to alert such persons of that fact and not to elicit mild sarcasm from yourself.

If you want to be informative rather than annoying, I'd recommend avoiding beginning comments with phrases like "There is a problem with X" when commenting on people's artwork unless critique has been specifically requested. Let me be frank; this artwork was not for you. It is for people who would like to see a Pernese dragon size chart measured in feet. If that's not your cup of tea, feel free to start a blog about the correct way to measure Pernese dragons and never look at this piece of art again. Perhaps sarcasm was not exactly required, but your comment was rude. This is not the appropriate place to air your grievances about non-canon measurement scales.

With that said, I'm glad that you enjoy the quality of my work. You're welcome to examine the rest of my gallery if you've a mind to, as long as you're respectful and considerate while you do so.

Oh boy. Pernese dragons are huge! o_o

Yuuuuuup! And this is the smaller measurement scale. Some people go by metres instead of feet, which means they'd be 3.3 times longer!

How tall are the dragons? I suck at reading charts like this but from what I can tell it looks like this:

Gold (13 or 14 ft)
Bronze (11 or 12 ft)
Brown (10 ft)
Blue (8 or 9 ft)
Green (6 or 7 ft)
White (5 ft)

Am I right?

I'd say that gold would be maybe 12-13 feet at the shoulder, the bronze is 11-12 feet, the brown is around 9 feet, the blue's somewhere between 7 and 8 feet, the green looks to be 6 or 7 feet, and the white is a little under 5 feet.

Keep in mind each one is the maximum size for their rank, and I'd imagine a dragon's height would vary depending on its build, even among dragons of the same length.

Well it looks like I was kinda close with my guesses.

I sort of figured as much about their sizes, after all individual horse sizes can vary widely even among those of the same breed.

By the way, thanks for the confirmation! I was really curious.

Yeah, you nailed it. The monstrous size of the queens are even still apparent without them seeming ridiculously so. I love it ^.^

I love it very much and shall use it for reference! Love how you draw dragons (I give 'em the same sort of eyebrows. ).

Yep exactly what Stellaretak said with the fighting, and also in the books it is discovered that dragons can move or carry anything they can believe they can. I also prefer feet to meters mainly because it's so hard to imagine something so huge. Plus if you look at Mammoth skeletons, which the one I saw was around the size of the blue in this pic, they are pretty darn big. xD Besides, it's sooo much easier to draw them when they're in feet. I love the colors, and the Gold and Bronze are absolutely beautiful too, I like how you made them metallic without too much shininess.

I like this scale. I prefer feet myself, partly because I find it easier to imagine the dragons that way in an RP context. It's hard for me to picture my characters hanging out with a creature bigger than a jumbo jet.

As for the logic of a green lasting a full fall...in the DLG (I think) it says that greens and blues are typically rotated out, because they get tired halfway through a fall. That's why we need so many greens!

i have to grump about this. if this was the scale the green would never have the strength to deal with a full fall and ruth would be far to little to carry four people. Anne herself said the dragon size is in meters not feet. but i do love the color you put on ruth.

The debate on meters/feet will never stop, and I prefer feet. Mostly, because a gold would be about 30-some feet to the shoulder in meters...which is taller than a house (several houses) and that is just to the shoulder. I really don't want to have to bathe that...nearly every day...you would have NO time to do anything else. But calculations from length-shoulder height depends on the style of dragon, too, so that can change...

Your opinion has been noted, and the time you took to comment is appreciated. However, what is or isn't canon isn't of much concern to me. I'm more interested in the logistics and logic of dragons as fighting machines, which is why I prefer measuring in feet over meters.
