I highly doubt your not gonna be able to battle online if you don't have him. He's just a character you can get BY CHOICE. That's like saying your not allowed to go online until you've unlocked Sonic or Mewtwo or Mr Game&Watch.

Well, Sonic and G+W are basegame, so their unlocking isn't needed because the data of them is already in the game the way it is when purchased. DLC however is additional content, which could lead to "You don't meet the requirements to play this match", not saying it will be like this but other games did this before.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. "So you have the game, you have all the characters and can play online but you don't have this extra character who's data isn't even in the game until you get him so you can't play online." That's just fucked up.
Why would they force that? I hope they don't do that because I'm not gonna spend my time getting some dumb character I'm not even gonna play as just to battle random people online.

You don't play many online games, do you? This is common practice. Either you won't be able to play at all, or it will filter out all opponents who have him.

I'm late, but I was dead wrong. There was a third option: Patch the game to include the content, but only unlock it for people who payed for it. This is why I don't work for nintendo.

I just don't like him. I'm okay with Ness but I just don't like Lucas for some reason. I just think its stupid, DLC characters are meant to be available by choice, saying you can't go online anymore would mean you have to get him if you want to play online again meaning Nintendo isn't giving you any choice!
