Description Part 1:

"You may be right" - Billy Joel - Trixie x Twilight
"Whatsername" - Green Day - Twilight's lament
"Vanilla Twilight" - Owl City - Trixie's lament

I like to think that Twilight and Trixie were in love for about a year before Twilight's princess duties - and Trixie being Trixie - began to tear everything apart. They were my first MLP ship, and they are still adorable, but not every relationship stands the test of time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Southern Cross" - Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Trixie hits the road to forget about Twilight

After the break-up, I think Trixie went back to life on the road. Specifically, she was commissioned Ambassador Plenipotentiary, 3rd class, At Large, (which is a joke, because "3rd class" implies "not plenipotentiary").

Trixie's magical talent is in psychomancy - reading and manipulating thoughts and feelings - which is a valuable talent for someone who is tasked with establishing formal relations with unknown nations and races with unfamiliar languages. After a few months in the far-flung land of Koalaustralia (in the capital of Kangberra), she formally invites Princess Twilight to visit the Equestrian Embassy for a formal state visit. Eventually both return to Equestria together, as friends.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me For Me)" - Blessid Union of Souls - Twilight x Moondancer

Eventually, Princess Twilight finds her perfect match.  So much book-nerd horse love!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Lola" - The Kinks - Trixie x Maud

"M-A-U-D, Maudie!" Maud is built a bit like a stallion, but she's all mare. Can you handle her love? Trixie sure can.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"She's a rebel" - Green Day - Truffle x Scoots
"Wind beneath my wings" - Bette Midler - Truffle x Scoots

Okay, someone will probably mention that Bette Midler is way too schmaltzy for Scoots, but I don't think so.  She's tough and snarky, but I think she's still as sweet and caring and ever below the surface.  Plus, I think the concept of "flying" has evolved to mean something different for her.  At first, it was disappointment and failure when she couldn't live up to her idol, RD.  But now that she's overcome the frustration and made peace with the fact that her wings will never carry her, so she uses "flying" to refer to achievement and success.  When she refers to Truffle non-ironically as the "wind beneath [her] wings", it means that he has lifted her up to a happier place.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Big shot" - Billy Joel - AB x DT
"Semi-charmed Life" - Third Eye Blind - DT's breakdown and intervention

This one is a triptych, but I haven't decided on the third song yet. Basically, DT goes out for a wild birthday party out on the town with a group that she paid to be her "crew" for the evening. Lots of illegal underage drinking and very poor decisions ensued. Fearing DT's parents, they instead dropped off DT's sleeping body on the porch of the Apple family home and ran off.

AB, her long-suffering, not-quite-enemy, found her about 03:00 AM and brought her in and laid DT in her own bed. AB then pulled out a camping bed roll and slept on the floor. There will be hell to pay in the morning, after Bloom's chores and after Tiara eventually wakes up. But maybe someone will admit that she messed up bad and ask for help?

Luna's beard, Diamond Tiara! How in Tartarus did I get to be your therapist? Can't your family afford to just send you to see the wolf in Canterlot? Or is this something you are trying to hide from them?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Eyes on me" - Faye Wong - Rarity x AJ
"Good directions" - Billy Currington - AJ x Rarity

Pretty straightforward, but this "Green Acres" pairing shows us that love can transcend our imagined boundaries.

The reader should note that I didn't include "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat. It's a great song, but the feeling really doesn't fit with these two.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"For the longest time" - SS x SB

Silver Spoon grew up with a skewed sense of affection - particularly due to the years of corruption by her "best friend" DT. But, under unexpected and dangerous conditions she found love and friendship. Fortunately, she had a close, loving family, so she knew that she wanted to find her true love, although she was a little surprised by who it was.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm Alright" - Jo Dee Messina - DT x SS eventual reconciliation

I like to think that DT and SS won't hate each other forever. I don't really think that Silver actually hates Diamond anymore - maybe pity is a better word - if she would just say she was sorry.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"She's Always A Woman" - Billy Joel - Twist x Babs

Whatever rude things you have to say about Barbara Anne Seed, Twist doesn't want to hear it. Babsie is perfect just the way she is!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Just the way you are" - Billy Joel - Trissie x Derpy
"Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)" - Nine Days - Derpy x Trissie
"Closing of the year" - Wendy and Lisa - Derpy x Trissie fireside cuddle theme

Derpy and Trissie have had hard lives, from the "bad beginning" to the "penultimate peril" (yesterday). At this point in their lives they have trouble trusting anypony else except for their respective daughters. But, maybe time does heal old wounds... And maybe life does provide seventeenth chances at happiness.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Memory" - Cats - Celestia's 1,000-year lament for Luna

Pretty straightforward. Tia misses Lulu, and is reminded of the pain every night when she raises and lowers the moon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"When can I see you again?" - Owl City - VS x Octavia
"4:33" - John Cage - Octavia x VS

Admit it, you were expecting Skrillex or deadmau5. Ha! Vinyl resents your attempts to classify her. She's also seriously confused by John Cage, but Tavi was smiling at her for four and a half minutes, so that's cool.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Shooting star" - Owl City - RD x Flutters
"The real world" - Owl City - Flutters x RD

These two are just too adorable together. RD thinks more highly of Flutters than Flutters does of herself, and Flutters feels so comfortable with her Dashie.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Unusually Unusual" - Lonestar - Cheese x Pinkie

This one probably doesn't even need an explanation.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Anything you can do" - "Annie get you gun!" - Pumpkin vs. Pound Cake

A period of sibling rivalry. I think they're both vying for the attention of the same stallion. Hijinx and shenanigans to follow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Somethings gotta give" - LeAnn Rimes - Cheerilee's lonliness theme
"She let herself go" - George Straight - Cheerilee's self-reliance theme
"My life" - Billy Joel - Cherilee's freedom anthem

Cheerilee has this reputation of the lonely mare who is unlucky in love. That may be true, but I think she eventually learns to be happy with herself without anypony else.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes" - Jimmy Buffett -

Daring Do shares some cider with the closest thing she has to a friend - superfan RD.

The life of a solo adventurer is exciting and rewarding, but sometimes even a "fictional" hero needs someone to talk to. As much as she hates to admit it, RD might be the closest thing to a friend she has right now. How is this her life? Luna help her...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Everybody's Got a Cousin in Miami" - Jimmy Buffett - Sand Dollar shares a bottle of rum with Filthy Rich

Two wealthy stallions reflecting on their lives and where to go from here. Sometimes they discuss future business ideas. Mostly they just drink rum and enjoy a "boys night". Rich much prefers red wine over rum, but he has learned to appreciate it during his friend's company. Particularly since his friend never brings cheap rum.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 2:

Just as a warning, sometimes I will intentionally interpret the lyrics differently than they were originally intended (e.g., playing it straight when the original was ironical).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" - Gilbert and Sullivan (Pirates of Penzance) - Twilight x mystery marefriend

Twilight is very knowledgeable about so many topics and she proudly spouts trivia at anyone who will listen.  In this case, she is describing how huge and sexy her brain is to her would-be marefriend.  No, she won't tell you the mystery mare's name; quit asking already!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Kodachrome" - Paul Simon - SB x SS

I admit that this one is a joke entry, but I enjoyed it enough to include.  I heart the idea of SB giving SS the nickname "Kodachrome" because of Silver's all-grey color-scheme (note that it is a meant in a very sweet way, describing how Sweetie finds Silver beautiful just the way she is).  In candy horse land I think that being grey-scale would stand out and draw (unwanted) attention.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"All I Ask Of You Lyrics" - Phantom Of The Opera - SS and SB duet

Yeah, this one is a cheap gimme; I really wanted to get at least one right (and my knowledge of showtunes is sadly lacking).  Plus, I know you would agree that this would be a lovely duet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I want you to want me" - Cheap Trick - Trixie x Trixie

This is just one of Trixie's morning affirmations that she sings  to her mirror.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Cruel to be kind" - Nick Lowe - Babs x Twist

Babs may be the sweetest jerk-ass in the world - when nopony is looking - but one would have to look closely to tell.  Even her attempts at compliments come out sounding like insults.  Lucky she found a filly whose special talent is possibly literally seeing the sweetness in the hearts of others.  (Or maybe she just likes candy canes?  Still not sure.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Just the way you are" - Billy Joel - Twist x Babs

Because Babthie is perfect just the way she is.  I seriously doubt that Babs thinks so highly of herself, and she probably has no clue what it is that Twist sees in her.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Skyfall" - Adele - Lyra x BonBon

This one is my attempt at a little inside joke, re: Agent Sweetie Drops from "Slice of  Life" (aka "Bond, Bon Bond").

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"25 or 6 to 4" - Chicago - Tavi x Scratch

Tavi loves Vinyl, but her all-night jam sessions are really hard to put up with.  ("How can you call that 'composing' when the end result isn't even music?")

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Come sail away" - Styx - Sand Dollar x Silver Sonnet

Okay, this one isn't real original, and doesn't fit as well as the title suggests, but I really want to learn more about these two.  Please give us more!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A Whole New World" - Aladdin - RD x Flutters

Of course cool ponies can love Disney. Maybe a little too on the nose, but if I was trying to woo Flutters, I think a Disney song would be a good choice (nopony includes as

many singing animal scenes as Disney).  [Side note: I think Flutters hides during the opening and the climax of most Disney movies, but she loves the middle and the end.]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Believe it or Not" - Joey Scarbury (Greatest American Hero theme) - Flutters x RD

Nopony could make Flutters enjoy flying unless it was alongside her Dashie.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Perfect Together" - Rosanna "Ro" Pansino - Cup Cake and Carrot Cake duet

Okay, I was pretty proud of this one.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 3A.

"Perfect isn't easy" - Bette Midler (Oliver and Company) - Diamond Tiara's theme

Nothing to say about this one.  Seriously, it's Diamond Tiara, and she's perfect.  Clearly it isn't easy to be perfect.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Once upon a time in New York City" - Huey Lewis (Oliver and Company) - Babs' and Trixie's friendship theme

Babs: "Why are you still hangin' around the boonies?  You could be a star in the Big Apple, y'know?"
Trixie: "Ugh.  More Apples?"
Babs: *glare*
Trixie: "Oh, right... I didn't mean YOUR family, obviously."
Babs: "That's one, Trix."
Trixie: "Come on, Barbie, you know Trixie is just playin' with you."
Babs: "At least let me book you a show downtown.  You know you want to be a star again."
Trixie: "Okay.  Trixie's wedding present to Babs is to perform a show in New York.  Twist will be on the list and Babs can be her 'plus one'."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Why should I worry?" - Billy Joel (Oliver and Company) - Babs' theme

"New Yawk City" is Babsie's town, and don't you forget it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Plant life" - Owl City - Scootaloo's adoption theme

Scoots never had the easiest life, but things got so much better when Mama Fluttershy and Mama Dash adopted her.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The load-out/Stay" - Jackson Browne - Trixie's appreciation theme

I'm not a huge fan of forced redemptions of antagonists, but I like to think that Trixie finally learned to appreciate her assistants and the other "little ponies" that make her shows possible.  Who eventually brought her around?  That's a story for another day (read: I still haven't decided).

There is a whole lot to love here.  Specifically, for me to love.  Because the vast, vast majority of these are my ships.  And the ones that aren't are still pretty good.  :3

Also batter-dipped in love is the plethora of Billy Joel songs.  Did I tell you that I love Billy Joel?  For his work was the soundtrack of my high school experience.

Now I have to go download the few songs on this list that I don't know.

You never mentioned it, but I knew it to be true.  The Piano Man was truly the soundtrack of our young lives.  I was lucky enough to see him in concert once, on 7 Feb 1999 (full disclosure: I didn't remember that date - a day after the 19th anniversary of my hatching - Google told me).  I actually cut several Billy Joel songs from the list because I wanted it to appear like I had diverse interests.  Between BJ, Jo Dee Messina, Green Day, and Pilots v Aeroplanes, that covers most of my middle and high school years.

At the very least, I hope to find enough inspiration to keep adding to this document as new songs inspire new stories.  I admit that I don't super-heart all of the songs listed, but they are the ones that gave me a story in my head.  Some of the songs I was inspired by the lyrics.   Others just by the feeling.  Some of them I had never heard before, but came across by the wonderful experiencing of picking a song on YouTube and letting it auto-play me wherever it wanted to go.  It's kind of a fun game (similar to the Wiki game): pick a song, hit play and see where you end up an hour later.

You're not the only one who plays the Random Youtube Game, heh. Loving your playlist here. The Flutterdash theme songs are especially perfect. They should play them at their wedding!

Speaking of shoulds, I should subject you to my own shipping soundtrack sometime (at least the tunes that don't overlap with yours...).

And here is part two of the list that totally isn't spam (seriously DA, come on):

"Skyfall" - Adele - Lyra x BonBon

This one is my attempt at a little inside joke, re: Agent Sweetie Drops from "Slice of  Life" (aka "Bond, Bon Bond").

That sounds like a good plan.  I'm always up for a friendly ship-off.  In fact, I will go one better and throw out a bunch of guesses first based on the few vague things I know
about you.  If I get one correct, then I get to proclaim to the internets that I am officially your 42nd biggest fan.  (Which isn't as bad as it sounds.  I think Liz cheated and claimed
superfan spots #1 - #10, and it's always good to have room to grow.)

Just as a warning, sometimes I will intentionally interpret the lyrics differently than they were originally intended (e.g., playing it straight when the original was ironical).  I also tried to keep the mix diverse (i.e., the longer you keep reading, "di-verse" it gets...).

Unfortunately, it appears that I will have to split it up or something, because DA keeps warning me that it thinks my awesome comment is spam.
