Description Part 1 of the 'Angels on our Shoulders' series.

I want to start doing a lot more of these quick little sketches - I've seen other artists playing around with the concept (a 'sketch dump'?) and I'd like to give it a go! I think that, particularly if the drawings are war-based, it's almost like a snapshot of a memory - sketched, perhaps not perfect or clear, maybe a little hurried or messy...I think that conveys the chaos of war and those blurred memories people have in situations like that - or even, on the other hand, that one little detail that people remember above anything else - maybe one scene or one person.
In this case, a medic's expression as he steadies himself after a shell blast, watching helplessly as his friends fall all around him.

High School Teacher - track I listened to as I sketched this, go listen! [link]

[EDIT] Ummm.. the 'quick sketch' turned into a full drawing! I couldn't help it!

Sale on photo prints ending today? Just the excuse I needed to finally order this one.

I retired last year after 20 years as a combat medic. Can't wait to display this with the other stuff I have on my "military wall of fame."

Astonishingly powerful - really is the little detail I will remember. His face looks very calm in all that chaos.

Thank you very much! I'm so pleased you like it. It means a lot!
Yes, through much of the research I've done, I was amazed to find that most combat medics seemed to miraculously managed to keep calm under the horrific conditions of the battlefield. It amazes me that they were able to do such a difficult job in such a hostile and terrible environment, and yet still save so many lives!
Thanks again for your comment - and great blog by the way, I love the Teddy Roosevelt quote!

Well that's very kind. I'm looking forward to spending some time looking at your work. This place is marvellous - I've popped in and out a lot over the years but for some reason today I decided to become a member...your drawing is going to haunt me for some time.

You know what? That's one of the loveliest comments I've had in a while. Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. I have a huge admiration for the men and women in the armed forces; both past and present, and feel I owe so much to them. I love to draw things like this, as I feel it's a little way of giving thanks to them.
Thankyou again

Thanks so much! For this, I used Derwent Graphic Soft pencils, which usually come in a tin ranging from F to 9B. They're really cheap, and lovely to use! Here: [link]
But I recently found Mars Lumograph pencils, and love them just as much! They're a bit more expensive, but they're amazing! [link] I'd definitely recommend either!

Thanks again! That does mean a lot! your gallery is looking great, lovely studies! Hands are so difficult, but like I say you pull it off perfectly! (if you could see my first ever study of a hand YOU WOULD WET YOURSELF LAUGHING! It was like a drunken scribble that sort-of looked like a spider )

How did you do those magnific shadows?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sparkypoo In reply to XanderXVII [2011-09-25 21:37:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I used a range of graphic soft pencils from H to 9B, the darkest shadows were done with the 9B (and a lot of pressure until my hand pretty much dropped off) and the lighter ones with the 4B-7B pencils...Hope this helps! Epic avatar, by the way!
