Description So, I watched Pom Poko the other day, and between that and the fact that the book I'm reading now (Wolf Captured by Jane Lindskold) has a sort-of anthro raccoon character in it, I decided I should draw a raccoon as well. And here we are. I've been trying to figure out what his name is-- maybe Plik, after the character in the book, or maybe Fish, or maybe something else entirely.

Not sure yet if he'll show up in Parallel Parchment or not. It's a possibility.

Done with acrylic paint and a little bit of colored pencil. The scanner ate some of my more subtle colors though, alas.

Art (c) Beth Zyglowicz 2006.

Love raccoons. Keep in mind that tanukis and raccoons aren't the same. Tanukis are "raccoon dogs", and are almost always portrayed with huge *ahem* gonads.

Oh, believe me, I know raccoons and tanuki are vastly different creatures. I know. Seriously. I realize the above description is a little vague, but I get it. You guys don't have to keep telling me.

(Sorry, this isn't the first time it's come up. One of these days I'm going to draw a tanuki and raccoon together just to make the differences obvious...) >_>;;

That racco0n (who also resembles a lemur because of the tail) needs to be fattened up! From what I've read, Pom Poko is about tanukis, Japanese "racco0n dogs" which aren't actually racco0ns. Remember the tanuki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3? The power-up comes from a leaf because leaves have something to do with the tanuki legend.

Well, lemur tails and raccoon tails are not very different. The lemur's tail is much longer though.

Pom Poko IS about tanuki, but while watching it I was interested in the differences between raccoons and tanuki, so I went and looked up some pictures, and re-realized how cool looking raccoons are.
