Description This is the final design that went on our SPWM t-shirts and it's finally going up today because we have a reunion at the JMM . If you're curious, feel free to read on. Be sure to float over all the acronyms.

Cue very long explanation. Starting from the beginning, if you don't mind me being a little bit long-winded.

The first week we were in Washington D.C., we had dinner at Tonic as a giant group. That was one dinner of many. MANY I tell you!! O: Friend 1 was telling us a summary about the story/novel she and her friend were planning on writing. Since it was so loud, I only heard certain parts, but the term 'swashbuckling pirate' stood out to me, so I decided to sketch this on the paper .

Friend 2 was a proponent of using my 'swashbuckling pirate' as part of the t-shirt, so I got impatient about the lack of action decided to redraw it the last weekend before we had to leave in case we were actually going to use it.
The next day at brunch, I not-so-subtly pulled it out and showed it off to Friend 3 /Friend 4 /Friend 5 and pressed them for more ideas. Friend 3 took off and suggested most of the ideas, though the other two helped. ^^ Somehow everything made it into the drawing, though perhaps not in the way that was initially intended.

So I drew the background on a separate piece of paper and eventually put the two together. Tada!

1. (Theory of Computation) The design on the pirate's coat is a state diagram for a NFA. (They were originally semi-circly designs like on this one .)
2. (Normed Division Algebras) The bridge is supposed to be Broom Bridge where Hamilton carved the equation for quaternions i2 = j2 = k2 = ijk = -1 in 1843.
3. (Semigroups) The bicycle (old-fashioned to match the rest of the picture) represents the bicyclic semigroup (as does the hard-to-see piece of parchment next to it that says C(p,q)). The egg carton is a reference to the eggbox diagrams we keep drawing in class to show some structures of the semigroups. The monster/dragon is the "ideal monster."
4. (Solitons) A soliton is a solitary wave that maintains its speed and shape for quite some distance/time as it travels. None of the waves drawn here are solitons, but oh well. The equation on top of the wave is the KdV equation, which can model solitons. YOU MUST GO WATCH THIS VIDEO.
(5. And finally, the pirate is a reference to Friend 1 's awesome storytelling. And possibly a reference to the director taking us out to eat so often, if you want to think of it that way hahahaha.)

/end very long explanation.
Enjoy~

I read that whole thing.

Very nice drawing and I love the references you put inside. The bicycle thing is too funny.

Thanks! I feel appreciated.

References are great. Unfortunately they're a bit complicated to actually explain. I like the bicycle too. Making it old fashioned was genius.

I don't understand what the dragon has to do with Ideals. But Solitons sound awesome

It doesn't. Well, it kinda does. @__@ The idea was for it to 'suck in' rather than have teeth but I added teeth anyways to make it look more menacing. Other than that.. I think it was more so the pirate didn't look so awkward.
