Description Been feeling like drawing more portraits lately, so heres another one...

This time the culprit is Yin from "Darker Than Black"...
Youve probably noticed that I always go for serious/dreamy expressions on my drawings, but Yin is so adorable that I added a bunch of cuteness and teasing to my usual mix (worked surprisingly well)

In terms of coloring its also a much more anime style than usual, and I even added those red shiny skin parts which are an anime trademark, though I usually dont like that because people overdo it, so I kept it pretty soft just to make the whole thing warmer

Also, I wanted it to have a strong focus on the left bare neck/shoulder area because its just incredibly sensual when done right... It just gives her a vulnerable/fragile feel, I love it

Feel free to suggest characters youd like to see portraits of (only girls though )

Good to know not everyone around here has a stick up their ass

Your first comment really put me on the defensive there because there seems to be a huge hate area on this site (mostly from people who roam the forums) who take everything WAY too seriously

(did you actually report it? ... lol, if you did, by the time DA looks at your ticket, it will be in the right category already/past 24 hours)

One thing though, and this is what bothers me about people who dont know how this works... Its not like you can just draw a stick figure and magically take it to the front page with some category, it needs to be "good enough" and have a pre-disposition to becoming popular... Ive had a couple, lets say "uninspired" drawing, where category did absolutely nothing for me...

Thats why I dont feel so bad about it anymore... And not to brag but, my stuff is there because people DO like it, a lot by the number of favs I get... Of course, I know popularity =/= quality, but like I said, I can assure you, people WONT fav a bad drawing, at least with me they dont

Awesome drawing
I love how her hair and eyes look.
And her shirt is pretty cool

Nice! I love Yin.
I think the right eye is too close to the edge... It looks very strange. Kinda offsets her nose/mouth as well. I also think her shoulders and arms are a little awkward. I don't think they should be that far behind her, otherwise it's a very awkward pose.

SoraNamae In reply to Reaper145 [2012-03-08 01:46:07 +0000 UTC]

Actually if you try doing her pose in the mirror (lean your chest forward a bit, makes it easier, lol), the arms do disappear just like that... I tried a lot of arm positions as usual and this fit the rest of the pic the best, because it adds to the teasing feel of the rest etc

But I see where you are coming from... As Im always saying, the problem with this is then you can also take another number of things like the neck being too long/thin etc, but keep in mind this isnt realism so I can take a few liberties here and there, as long as I dont butcher anatomy completely

Reaper145 In reply to SoraNamae [2012-03-08 02:03:08 +0000 UTC]

I understand, and I just tried it. You're right. But I still find it to be a really unnatural/uncomfortable/awkward pose.
I really hope you don't take this the wrong way. But if you don't mind me asking, why ask for critique then? I mean, if you realize you're only taking artistic/stylistic liberties, which is perfectly fine, and don't particularly want more realistic proportions.... I have no problem with that! Just curious
Unless you mean for the coloring/technique, in which case maybe you should be more specific on what you are asking for critique for?

SoraNamae In reply to Reaper145 [2012-03-08 02:22:32 +0000 UTC]

Yep, the kind of critique I like is more about colors/lightning etc, technical aspects, which almost no one talks about...

Anatomy is just too based on preference and heck, if you even consider how different people have completely different body types, its really unnecessary unless its completely off

Or else, everyone could just go in every anime pic made and say "Boobs are too large" "Legs are too long" etc... Is there really a point?

I dont really ask for critique actually, I use it just because its so rare to get in-depth comments here, but all the people who use the critique feature usually know what they are talking about (because if they say a bunch of nonsense, they will just get hammered with "Dislikes")

Okay That's understandable. Like I said, I just personally think maybe if you put that in your artists comment somewhere, that you'll get more critiques oriented towards colors/lighting/etc, so people know exactly what you're looking for and target that area.

Lovely work! This is a real master piece, only apparently simple but full of emotion, and the color, ohh the color, has some vintage style which is just great since we are talking about a a so cute drawing.

I like a lot your so inspired work.

A fellow tuga

Thanks, and youre spot on, I was inspired by those vintage photos with strong cyan/magenta overtones, its something that I really like

In fact I think the whole combo of cyan shadows > magenta midtones > yellow highlights makes anything look amazing (probably because they are all base colors ) so I try to use it as much as possible

yeap. and you really know how to manage them in an incredible way.

I agree with you with about that amazing colors, which are often quite magical, and it seems always to show one of the best balanced effects between the great beauty ever seen and the best old times. Most probably this kind of art is one of those would last for eternity.

And amazing drawings like yours help a lot that!

The character helps, really though she usually has a "dead stare", since shes a doll, but I felt like doing a more humane look

Thanks Every once in a while I get someone who says the eyes are too far apart, but thats pretty much an anime thing, and I think its one of the reasons people like my portraits so much... Maybe later Ill post a quick thing I did comparing anime to realism to show this difference

Yeah, I LOVED the Gaiden OVA... YinxHei is just one of the best couples ever

It was way better than the 2nd season, which focused too much on that girl no one cared about

I KNOW! I love Yin and Hei together, which is why I hated Amber as much as I did in the first season XD

I didn't like the second season much... Hei looked like a hobo, and I did not like Suou. All the other new contractors were cool... Not her!

Very nice! Though I think the eyes could use just a little work... :/ It feels like the right eye is too far out compared to the left...

She is very pretty though... Good job!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SoraNamae In reply to KuriosDrachen [2012-03-07 22:20:42 +0000 UTC]

I could fix that easily if I wanted, but its a personal preference, not a flaw... All my portraits are like this... Look at "Moon", they are way too far apart compared to real people, but did anyone care? Nope, lol looks sexier that way IMO

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KuriosDrachen In reply to SoraNamae [2012-03-08 14:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Well I usually like how you draw the eyes... maybe I've been looking at too many realism portraits and need a dose of anime again...
