'Butcher' doesn't seem to quite cover the damage you're alluding too. I'm not sure there is a word strong enough to fill the void though.

You know what, I'm actually gonna try and come to this movies defence a little.

The best way to think of this is not actually an adaptation. It's more like a live action summery of the first series. That's why it's nothing but exposition. It's just summing things up.

ScottRansom21 In reply to kayanne21 [2016-03-08 07:21:40 +0000 UTC]

I am sorry, but that is a flimsy defense at best. Even if it were just exposition, let us note what large plot points were missing.

1. King Bumi. He is no small player and by cutting him out you cut out the believable reason he will look for an Earth Bending teacher with very specific qualities as well as one of the largest members of the WHite Lotus.
2. You cut out the Kiyoshi Warriors, something that was key in the seasons both for infiltration of Ba Sing Se and would end up more as a love interest for Sokka.
3. Need I really point out the stupidity of Earthebenders in a prison of earth? There was a reason they were on a metal platform in the middle of the ocean: To break their spirit and cut them off from as much earth as possible.
4. The lack of Jeong Jeong disturbs me greatly as it removed the single most powerful reason Aang tries to swear off fire bending. It gives him a emotional roadblock that must be resolved later.

Not to mention, let's go over some fundamentals.

1. All forms of bending do not require complex motions. In fact, many actions of bending are given from intent and a single motion to create a powerful effect. This is clearly seen as Zuko lost his drive and could not fire bend. Even one episode of the show, however, shows just how quick paced the bending is fired off.
2. Fire Bending DOES NOT need fire from an outside source in the slightest. They use their own energy to create the fire, their breathing being an important part of the fighting style as well as their rooted footing for basic fire bending styles. More importantly, such a limitation makes their possible ruling and being a threat for so long impossible. They would have literally zero chance to conquer if that were a limitation.
3. This is the largest slap to the face: The down-scaling of the Avatar State. I don't really think I need to say it, but let's put this into context. In the show Aang becomes a giant water monster that, alone, chases off an entire Fire Nation Fleet, acting as a medium for the spirit of the ocean itself to get revenge on those who had slain the moon spirit. And only as the balance is restored does the spirit release the hold on Aang's body.
4. Even if this was exposition, the spirit of the characters is all wrong. Aang comes across as an emotional mute here. However, in the series he's a kid. He smiles, laughs, makes jokes, tries to have fun at every turn. Sokka makes legitimate jokes, is far more expressive, and really is a good guy. Let's even look at Zuko and Iroh. Zuko was hot-headed and driven to extremes, borderline psychotic. His uncle was a lovable goof and hidden badass. Neither one lives up to that. THe Iroh is serious and too calm about things while Zuko seems to merely brood.

And from a non Fan standpoint.
1. The story is rushed, poorly executed, and the plot holes are massive (Fire nation holding military presence with heavy limitation on fire)
2. The fight scenes are slow, unimaginative, and overall poor quality.
3. The character's aren't relate-able in any way, being either cartoonishly stupid (Zhao) or just an emotional mute (Almost everyone else)
4. Anticlimactic ending with sequel bait. Who in the world is that girl? (Azula)

Sorry, but there really is no defending this movie in my eyes or in the eyes of many really. But take this as my own opinion and the opinion of a few friends.

Making fun at a safe distance, since, after all, the kid IS a real Karate Champion. Yeah, I make fun, but I'm not suicidal.

Me too! But Shyamalan, a writer and director I truly respect (Unbreakable and Sixth Sense, what a combo!), but he is not fit for this kind of story.

Well, let's hope he can keep the spirit of the cartoon alive, or this movie's going to be a thing to forget... and possibly make fun at.
