Ink, 5x7Legend has it that Amanita muscaria (the mushrooms depicted here) are a bit of a treat for caribou/reindeer. Due to the hallocenogenic properties of this particular mushroom, it is said that it gives reindeer the "ability to fly."
It was a joy to create this piece for one of my patrons. It ended up having much more meaning to her than I anticipated, and I love it when that happens.

You know... Of all the comments that I have received over the years (outside of critique, which is super important)...this is one of the most INTELLIGENT, IMPORTANT observations that's been communicated to me in an incredibly long time. You've seen my art in all of its tangents and representations in style, medium, and subject over the years. Illustrative art is something I really strive for--the "storybook" kind, and it encompasses EVERYTHING so that viewer gets absorbed into the picture--the overall ENVIRONMENT. It is edge-to-edge, top-to-bottom in its composition and coverage. I'm elated that you pointed this out, because you know that it's not about one little thing in the image. It's not about a simple, cute little graphic that can be made into a sticker (though it wouldn't be a bad idea). It's about all of it, working together, to create that little 2-dimensional world that grips the viewer and keeps them looking...and it IS difficult to pull it all together sometimes so that nothing gets lost in translation.
I ended up talking WAY TOO MUCH about that, but....really, this comment is positively encouraging me to keep on doing illustrative pieces like these--backgrounds, environments, and all. Thank you for saying so; I mean it.
