omg im amazed D: I suppose this is time consuming but in the end it looks so... wow *A*
How do you make each side look so perfectly even?

Thank you very much! ^__^#
Hmm, well, this was my first real knot design that I ever did (though I had dabbled a tiny bit several years earlier, with pathetic results ), and I really had no interest in hassling with a grid system, so I pretty much just did the designs spontaneously. ...But that's not very helpful, ne?
The way I typically do pieces like this is that I start out with a shape; in this case, it was a stylized leaf, so it became a heart. Then, I break the shape down into really simple shapes: circles, triangles, diamonds, teardrops, elipses, etc., etc. Then I handle each of those simplified shapes individually, with consideration to how they'll connect to/with the other shapes. (If you look carefully on this piece, you can see that the main leaf is made up of, essentially, 6 shapes, all with lines that loop into one another.)
I used this same technique with the Phoenix piece that's in my gallery. The main key is to SIMPLIFY! Break it up into more manageable sections, and go from there. ^^

eep. thats osme intense knot work there billy..
its something i love, but never have the time, or foresight to draw.
excellent example of freehanded, complex knotwork.

Thank you. #^_^# When I do knot-work, I pretty much just start with the general shape I want and break it into really basic shapes, then try to think of different ways to fill it all in. Plus, getting the knots to overlap right and whatnot gets me to really think about what I'm doing.

I've tried this type of thing and have *never* been able to manage. Your patience amazes.

Heh, I usually spread something like this out over at *least* a few days, and I think this piece was in-prog for at least a couple of weeks. It takes a lot of time, and I can only get so far in one sitting before my brain starts to feel all smushy. ^^'

I love Celtic knotwork. And this appears to be all freehand, that's admirable! The little creature designs you incorporated into the concentric circles are an excellent touch.

Thank you very much. Well, I had those two circles and I wasn't sure what to do with them, but knot-animals are a lot of fun to do, and the bird and dragonfly fit pretty well with the plant theme.
