Description 10" Rodman smooth-bore muzzleloading cannon on iron carriage. This gun could propel a 125 lb. ball slightly over a mile at 5 degrees elevation. It could be fired to a much greater distance, but crude sights prevented accuracy at extreme ranges.

Yes, but I don't think that they fired the guns too often. This type of fort and cannon became obsolete shortly after the 1860's. What a waste of a million dollars.

Forts are funny things, they kind of make sense in that you want to be behind the thickest walls possible, but then they become a target for all the weapons your enemy can bring...

A million dollars was a hell of a lot back then...
