Nah, in the game, Shadow never went back in time. He just had a flashback. Black Doom caused him to remember that day, in order to spark his hatred for humanity, and get Shadow to help him take over the planet.
How the levels "The Doom" and "Lost Impact", which both are flashbacks, are related.... I'm not really sure. I think they're both about Maria's last day alive.

Haha I never got past the level, kept getting lost and stuck on 49/50 soldiers, that explanation makes so much more sense though, thanks for taking time to write it out :3 You really captured how stupid G.U.N. soldiers are xD

I know what you mean. I'd say that out of all the levels in that game, The Doom is the most difficult. I just played it with my boyfriend recently... we ended up taking turns with that level, took us hours to find all the soldiers. X_x
And thank you. xDD They do seem incredibly stupid in that game. Running and firing basically anywhere.
