Description
Hey guys!
Here's something I did just for fun!
I decided to draw my maned wolf Raoni again, you remember him? i.imgur.com/yCHyiEG.jpg
He’s dressed as a cangaceiro, as a fun tribute to one of our most intriguing movements, the Cangaço, which happened in the northeast of Brazil during the 1840-1940’s.
Cangaceiros were a group of bandits who fought against the government at the time. Both men and women roamed the caatingas (almost like deserts?) in nomadic groups, carrying heavy guns and heavily ornamented hats and clothes, seeking revenge, justice, fame, freedom and money, refusing to become another victim of the poverty and heavy abuse from authority.
Some helped the poor, some killed just for the sake of power and revenge. They were literal desert pirates, and they were nearly unstoppable. A special police force was created only in order to hunt them down, called the “Volantes”, who were always on their tail, and extremely bloody conflicts always followed their encounters in the wilderness. The farmers constantly fell victim to both sides (wouldn't want to be in their skin!).
The most famous cangaceiro of all was Lampião (meaning “Oil Lamp”, because, according to local tales, he shot so quickly he could illuminate the night). He and his wife Maria Bonita ("Pretty Maria") were the head of the groups during their final years, turned into a popular myth.
Their tales intrigued me since I was a child, and now, they’ve been inspiring many aspects of my stories (including No North). It's Brazil's closest thing to the western genre, after all, and it's pretty epic. I wished the Cangaço was more well known internationally.
If you’d like to see more about this, here’s something to give you a little taste! youtu.be/L1ly3_xP390?t=54s
Watch the first 5 minutes to see that classic encounter between the cangaceiros and the volantes. Lampião is their leader, the one with one eye and round glasses, a very iconic look. Maria Bonita is always by his side.
Anyway, history class is over
I really hope you guys enjoy this!
Have a great week!

Awhile back I was surfing the internet when I came across a vintage photograph of
two cangaceiros on Pinterest. I thought to myself, "What quaint and comical loo....."
It was then that I took notice of the severed human heads stacked between the two!
I would not have chosen to be a member of the Volantes! But I've no doubt that they
committed such atrocities themselfs.
Nonetheless this is a great drawing of Raoni! Maned wolves are among my favorite canines!

Amazing description of the History of the Cangaceiros, I never heard of them before but now I am interested to learn more if No North draws some inspiration from their history then I can't wait to read it!

Hungarian freedom fighters. form a rebel army, steal guns, directly engage the authoritarian army.
Brazil Freedom Fighters: Create the desert pirate movement to kick authoritarians in the butt.
I think I should bring back the rebelion story in some form...
