So, I've noticed that a lot of people who have played Grand Theft Auto 2 think that the game is set in 2013. The reason why is because of the criminal records of some of the deceased characters in the game on one of Rockstar Games' websites. But there's a huge problem: Rockstar would all of a sudden say that the game is "set three weeks into the future." This is where things immediately begin to fall apart when it comes to the developers of the game and because of that, we need to look into the game rather than what the developers say (similar to how RetroGamingNow does it when he looks into the lore of Minecraft).

So, what year is GTA 2 set in? Well, that's obvious. The game is set in 1999, the year it was released. Don't believe me? Well, there's actually some in game evidence that can prove this. If you are driving a car and you listen to Head Radio, there's a good chance you will come across that evidence. One of the hosts of Head Radio, Johnny Riccaro, tells us that "a millennium is coming" and he mentions the Y2K bug. So riddle me this, if GTA 2 is set in 2013, then why would Riccaro tell us that a millennium is coming if it is about thirteen years past? That makes absolutely no sense!

Although that's the only in game evidence we have, I personally believe that it is enough to say that the game is set either in or no later than 1999. This still leaves some unanswered questions, however. Why do the car designs match those from the '60s and why are some of the weapons futuristic? While this is probably because the developers wanted to be creative, there does not seem to be an in game answer to this. But that is a story for another time.
