Description HWE Tsukumogami:
Alias: Possessed Objects, Kami of Tools, Various individual names for specific objects
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral as a whole although some have tendencies of other alignments.
Rank: All depends on their host object, Most are Rank 1, Some are Rank 2, and its presumed that some large feats of engineering could become a Tsukumogami or an entire colony of them.
Race: Sub-race to Yokai

Size:
Height: Varies
Weight: Varies

Powers:
100 Years until Life: A Tsukumogami is a phenomenon exclusive to those areas in the influence of the ToHo plane. When an Object reaches an age of exceeding 100 years of age, the latent enigma energies it has absorbed over the years of being exposed to the ToHo Plane will cause it to develop its own Soul or Dama, thus transforming the object into a Tsukumogami. While some can become Tsukumogami earlier or need to wait even longer varies from subject to subject.

Just a little bit supernatural: Every individual Tsukumogami has their own variety of powers and abilities specific to their host object. But the most common are developing, eyes, teeth and a long tongue. Some can fly, some can shape-shift,  some can permanently extend themselves, it all depends on the specific nature of particular Tsukumogami.

Weaknesses:

Object in Life, Object in Death: Tsukumogami are still just objects, while some have specific immunities, most can be 'killed' by breaking or destroying them with fire or something similar. However, some objects are easier to break than others.

Exorcism: Problem Tsukumogami can be exorcised outright rendering them back into a harmless object as the Tsukumogami is a fragile vessel for a soul, as such it is relatively easy to banish a Tsukumogami, albeit temporarily. Some are harder to preform than others, as Tsukumogami born from Shinto or Buddhist tools will have a resistance to attempts to exorcize them (the Hahaki-Gami) one can also prevent a Tsukumogami transformation by doing regular purity rituals to purify the object in question to rid the latent kegare present therein therefore preventing or stalling Tsukumogami transformation or birth for at least a little while.

Servants of Yokai: Tsukumogami often are barely sentient and have little to no will for themselves outside of immediate entertainment, as such many other Yokai like Tanuki often are capable of indoctrinating Tsukumogami into their service creating miniature 'Night Parades'.

Enigma: Tsukumogami need an enigma rich environment to properly manifest, otherwise they can easily die back down into a regular object, laying dormant until they can wake up again and cause mischief.

Nurikabe
Alias: Painted Wall
Alignment: True Neutral
Rank: 1? 2?
Race: Yokai

Powers:

Surprise!: A Nurikabe is invisible until someone tries to pass an area it is blocking

Ever Expanding: A Nurikabe will continuously expand its sizes or its height to prevent someone or something from passing it.
Dense and Indestructible: A Nurikabe cannot be destroyed by any attack and it cannot be knocked over.

Weaknesses:
Tapping of a Stick: A Nurikabe can be warded off by tapping a stick at its feet, in which case it will suddenly vanish.  However, some specific Nurikabe in recent memory ignore this entirely requiring different methods to bypass, likely some sort of phrase or spell.

THE WALL: While a Nurikabe can be an insurmountable obstacle to pass if your a human, they are simply an obstacle, nothing more, nothing less. They have no way of attacking whatsoever or running away outside of suddenly vanishing from existence.

Kaiju? Please Carry on sir: A Kaiju which is larger than a Nurikabe (see: can step over) will cause the Nurikabe to not manifest at all, at least in the open. Nurikabe nowadays prefer to use the effectivity of alleyways, internal corridors, or subterranean caves.

*the previous night*

Night had fallen on Hoshoku as the rain continued to pelt throughout the night. In a small, humble shrine a teenaged Shrine Miko sat hard at work. Ruki sighed as she finished reading over the last scroll.

"Tsukumogami, huh?" Ruki breathed as she sat back and listened to the sound of rain pelting the Shrines roof. She gazed upwards, her thoughts adorn with awe and wonder.

'Tsukumogami... the objects who come to life after one hundred years to become Yokai...' Ruki spoke to herself, trying to sort out the ramifications of what she had read. Brooms, Bedrolls, Paper Umbrellas, even old dusty scrolls. "I guess anything can become a Yokai, huh?"

"Indeed." a voice spoke in her mind

Ruki jumped backwards in shock.

"D-D-Don't do that, you old lizard!" Ruki called out in her mind. "Can my head have privacy?"

"Not when you are speaking aloud, you can not" Kaitheros teased

"Oi... still not fair." Ruki huffed.

"So I assume you've finished at least reading those scrolls I gave you."

"Reading and recording about half." Ruki sighed, rubbing the palms of her hand as her fingers gripped back and forth as her wrists ached.

"Well! Looks like the lazy miko got something done today!"

"Be quiet you..." Ruki growled at the jab

"Anyways, I assume you've been well acquainted with the the various other specific phenomenon-related Yokai that dwell in and around our lands?"

"Y-Yeah. Speaking of which..." Ruki started before digging through the scrolls, before picking up a (relatively) younger one.

"What do you know about this?"

"Not much. That particular scroll is a Yokai bestiary written by the Miko before you. Back in the later years of the 19th century as you refer to it as. Now I guess you realize why I wanted you to copy down a new scroll of this information. Although, I do not know the exact contents of the scroll.." Kaitheros trailed off.

"Thats...interesting." Ruki stated while looking at the scroll, its contents contained a forward by an unnamed "Hoshuko Miko" addressing the next Miko to come after her.

"To my nearest descendant," the note read:

"I know not whether you shall be my daughter, or my grandaughter, or a more distant descendant, but I address this note to you regardless. The world is changing before my eyes. Traditions and rites are being forgotten in the advance of rationalism and western thought. Already my spiritual connection with the world is beginning to wane outside of the Den. But I still hold true to my beliefs in spite. I cannot bear the thought of my descendants living in a world where they believe my reality was but a myth or children's story. I cannot tell you how many weird and wondrous things things exist in this world. Giants that eclipse mountains, and the strange creatures that dwell in our fantastic reality. The Nanban Traders may speak of those things as non-existent, but please believe that such things do exist. I dread a dark age creeping upon our world, a world were thousands perish by the minute and a world were kami are nothing but fantasy. However, it is a dark age I must embrace... I am trapped in between two worlds, and I fear I can longer hold onto the fantasy I hold so dear. I have convictions and engagements I must answer to tying me back to this world. I have made my vows, and I cannot betray them. Even if it means losing a dearest friend and mentor of these wondrous things. While I cannot stay in this world, I can share the wonders of its contents. This archive lists a group of my particular favorite, those wondrous, fantasy objects that made my childhood and world a veritable land of wonder: the Tsukumogami. Even though they no longer get up and cause their mischief in my time, I hope they may some day get up and cause theirs for yours. I write this note to you in hopes you experience such wonders. As well as continue a tradition. A tradition of the old generation passing along the torch to the new. Don't tell the old-dragon, though, this is a confidential note for the eyes of a Hoshoku Miko only. Our little secret. A tradition of archiving this wondrous land for the new generation and passing your personal thoughts and feelings down with them, a tradition going as far back as Himiko and the Yellow Empress. Once this scroll is read, please hide it away after you archive the wondrous artifacts therein. Hide it in the old shrine in the mountains, there you shall find the other scrolls from your ancestors. Its our little secret, that old-dragon can't know everything now, can he? Now, I leave this in your hands, my descendant. This is the last thing I shall ever write as a Hoshoku Miko. Please, do not forget the land of wonder. - Hoshoku Miko, Koji--" The date was smeared.

"Did it answer any questions you may have in regards to Tsukukogami?"

"Y-Yeah." Ruki answered back.

"Alright then, then our lesson for today is concluded. You can sleep in this shrine for tonight, the storm has gotten worse as night fell, no sense in forcing you home." Kaitheros finished, as Ruki was again left with the sound of rain pelting rooftop and the impact tremors of a giant dinosaur making his way elsewhere. However, with Kaitheros gone away to elsewhere in his lair, Ruki scrambled and got out a new scroll...

"To my nearest descendant..."

Ruki Motoko's thoughts and comments on Tsukumogami:

"    So Tsukumogami, where to begin? They are innocent enough Yokai with a bit of a malice streak in some cases. Their most strangest aspect is the fact they are objects that, once they reach one hundred years, they develop Souls and become Yokai. Most are harmless mischief  makers that look like something out of a cartoon or ghost story.  Most of them are rather silly looking often growing eyes, hands, and a mouth complete with long tongue. Any sort of object can become a Tsukumogami as long as certain conditions are met. An object that used frequently by monks, an object that is misused, or an object that just gets really old all are ways a Tsukumogami can be born.
While most are harmless, some do have a streak of violence, as expected of Yokai. Oh Kami, The Old Lizard's cynicism is rubbing off on me! Anyways, so it might be time to exterminate one if its called for. Tsukumogami are rather frail spiritually it seems, and their 'soul' can easily be expelled by Shinto-Buddhist rites, that or you can just break it over your knee... or burn them. They are easy to destroy traditionally, is all I'm saying. Also it appears, they need 'spiritual energy', which I think is what we call Enigma today, to manifest. Otherwise they just look like regular objects. How many objects that exist in museums that are Tsukumogami just waiting to get enough energy to wake up? Oh Kami, what about War Museums?  Oh, Please tell me there isn't Tsukumogami Machine Guns or Tanks! Anyways, a Tsukumogami's durability is only as much as its object, so they can be easy to break or hard to break if need be. I pray there isn't Tsukumogami tanks. Or a Tsukumogami train."

"Tsukumogami don't have much will or ambition on their own. Some attack their owners for misusing them, others just attack to attack. But most are just run of the mill mischief makers. Licking people, scaring them, making noise, etcetera. It seems that most Tsukumogami are instead made servants of by other Yokai like assistants, security, or messengers something called...Shikigami, I think. I need to ask Thero-kun about it later. So on their own, they are not much of a threat."

"There is a wide array of Tsukumogami. A lot of them. Here are a few I particular enjoyed:

Hahaki-Gami: A living broom with wings that flies around sweeps out impurities as well being charms to sweep out everything from evil spirits to unwanted house guests. I guess this is because brooms were once a holy item to be used in ritual purification ceremonies, so the Tsukumogami version likewise sweeps out evil. I now and forever have more respect for the humble broom.

Karakasa-Kozo: A Chinese Paper Umbrella come to life. Has one eye and mouth with a long tongue. It flies around at night and surprises or scares people by licking them. There is another variety  of Karakasa called a HoneKarakasa that flies around the sky on windy nights like a bird. Both are harmless outside of getting scared by a ghostly umbrella licking you.

Bake-Zori: Straw Sandals which come to life and cause mischief. Running around on arms and legs they grow and making noise and singing. Pretty Harmless.

Mokumoku-Ren: A paper-wall which gets damaged and not repaired. It grows eyes on every panel and watches your every move. Its harmless but very creepy. Its like they can be used as a spy or something. Not something I wish to see!

Shiro-Uneri: A dirty old dish rag or towel that flies around in the shape of a dragon. It is not harmless as it flies around attacking people with its stench, causing them to pass out from it. There is also a story of them strangling people to death, but they seem to be more focused on mischief, but still something I should be cautious over.

Ittan Momen: A ten foot long piece of cloth which flies around and wraps itself around some poor person's face, smothering or strangling them..often to death. These are very malicious Yokai indeed. I also read that some Yokai use these Tsukumogami as a means to capture and restrain their victims or prey... god I hope there isn't any of "those" kind of Tsukukogami... Shibari-Gami no thank you!

Chochin-Obake: A Paper-Lantern that acts like a Karakasa-Kozo. Has eyes and mouth which it uses to scare and lick a person. Harmless and somewhat cute, although... it seems that Onryou can disguise themselves as Chochin-Obake...better be careful around all Tsukumogami then, if Onryou can disguise themselves as one, I have to be really cautious!

Kyorinrin: A bunch of old scrolls, books, scriptures and other texts that sit unstudied, unread, abused and gathering dust. They gather all together to form a spirit of wisdom in the shape of a Dragon. It decorates itself with ornate scrolls and other books, wearing them like a Kimono, making it look very ornate. Has long arms made from scrolls which extend and a bird-beak. It attacks its ignorant owners in particular, for letting the priceless knowledge it contains sit unused and abused for so long. Uh.. I guess I really should be reading a lot of the old scrolls around the shrine then...just to be safe.

Biwa-Bokuboku: A Biwa which comes to life. It grows a body like a human and walks around the land with a cane. Playing music by itself for money with music so beautiful it can charm Oni! This is all kinds of cool!

Now there are lots of other Tsukukogami, tea-cups that come alive, self-wielding katanas, a saddle that served the Yamato No Orochi (Note to self, try to get Thero-Kun to discuss the Orochi) and loads of others! However there is one in this is listed that seems way odd, the Nurikabe. They are often said to be invisible until you step right up to one, in which case it suddenly appears. There are multiple descriptions of what it looks like here...some describe a black wall with facial features, whereas others paint a fantastic beast that is flat like a wall that looks like something from old Buddhist stories from India. It cannot be moved, it cannot be destroyed, it cannot be knocked down. It just stands in your way blocking you forever. You can't go around it else it extends its sides. You can't go over it else it gets taller. The only way past it is to tap a stick like a gohei at its feet and it will vanish. That is all there is to it. It doesn't chase you, it doesn't attack. All it does is block your path. There was mention by the Miko before me that some of the Nurikabe she encountered could only be rid off with a special spell, song, poem or password. Leading me to believe they were being used for some nefarious ways in later years. Anyways, I do not know if a Nurikabe is a Tsukumogami (what is it? A wall come to life?), A phenomenon, or just another Yokai. But what I do know, it is weird."

"Anywho, that is enough for today, I have to ask Thero-Kun tomorrow about certain things, oh! and I need to hide that message scroll...hehe..."

Hm, curious. Why hide stuff from Kaitheros? I'm sure there is a reason, maybe for the obvious one: just to have a secret.

Tsukumogami are as fun as ever. Possibly the most famous Yokai ever, next to Oni anyway. Surprised there was a living Dildo joke.. buuttt maybe best not made. Cute, little troublemakers... I wish I had one. Surprised Miko doesn't have one. I'd love one.
I feel the Nurikabe will return for later story purposes.

Not so much mean as 'mischievous girls who wish to have their own little secrets every now and again'
