Description HWE Nure-Onna
Alias: "Wet Woman",
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Rank: 1 - 2
Race: Yokai

Size:

Length: Upwards to 18 meters
Height: *default rearing* Upwards to 8 feet.
Weight: Upwards to 1000 lbs.

Powers:
Mass Manipulation: A Nure-Onna's favorite hunting tactic is to pin their unfortunate prey (often sailors or fisherman) by posing as a exhausted, shipwrecked woman holding a baby. The Nure-Onna than asks for the person to hold her "baby" so she can rest. The moment the poor sod takes a hold of the bundle it suddenly becomes as heavy as boulder, rendering their victim unable to move.

Illusionary Bundle: The Nure-Onna has minor enigma prowess capable of disguising portions of its body or something the Nure-Onna is holding. This often applies to its "baby" which is either a rock or sometimes something more insidious. Some cases report the bundle being coated with a glue like adhesive forcing the victim to be stuck to it or it being a stone "stocks" which bolts around the victims hands, holding them to the ground.

Vampire Tongue: The Nure-Onna's tongue can pierce skin and quickly drain the victim of blood.

Crushing Coils and Unhinging Jaws: A Nure-Onna, like a lot of serpents, can wrap around its prey and begin to crush the life out of them or suffocate them. While not a preferred method of diet, a Nure-Onna can also unhinge its jaws to swallow its victim whole if it needs more lasting sustenance than usual.

Jolly Cooperation: Nure-Onna are cunning snakes, as such they often cooperate with other Yokai with the same diet to hunt, specifically, the Ushi-Oni, who shares its habitat. These cooperative efforts can result in the Ushi-Oni killing its prey and leaving its leftovers for the Nure-Onna or the Nure-Onna taking its fill of the victims blood and then leaving the (often still living but barely conscious due to sudden loss of blood) victim on the ground for the Ushi-Oni to devour at its leisure. Other tactics can include the Ushi-Oni chasing the victim to the Nure-Onna, the Nure-Onna holding the victim down for the Ushi-Oni, The Nure-Onna luring a victim towards a waiting Ushi-Oni, or defending each others territory. They also likewise team up with another aquatic vampiress, the Iso-Onna, which is a very similar species.

Weaknesses:
Not So Fast: A Nure-Onna is not very adept at chasing its victim, as such a victim who manages to avoid a Nure-Onna's initial attack can have a relative easy time running away...providing an Ushi-Oni isn't nearby.

"I saw through your ruse!": A Nure-Onna can easily be revealed by someone even faintly enigma-sensitive, as their illusion begins to falter from further away, giving the person enough time to spot the Nure-Onna's trick and make a run for it.

Serpent: A Nure-Onna is more snake than woman, or rather a snake in the shape of a woman. As such once they feed, they won't need to feed again for a long time, need to sunbathe to warm their bodies, and overall quite sluggish during dawn and dusk.

Ambush: A Nure-Onna's entire hunting strategy is through deception and ambush, as such all of their tricks involves trying to goad a victim to come near them so the Nure-Onna can trap them. As such their hunting strategies is often times easy to see through, as really, how many distressed shipwrecked naked women can you expect to find holding babies on Japanese beaches these days? (answer: not that many if none-at-all.)

Day 12/13: The Jolly Cooperation of Snakes and Ox-Demons.

"Sometimes, I really, REALLY hate the weather here..." bemoaned a certain Miko as she planted her face onto the desk she was slumped over. A sudden crackle of thunder and the ever pounding sound of rain emanated throughout the top the shrine was in. "it was sunny and clear yesteeerrrrdaaaay...."

"Nature is just as fickle here as she is everywhere else on this earth. Personally, I prefer constant downpours to endless drought."

"No wonder they call you a storm god."

"There is more to that than just personal preference...
" Kaitheros chuckled.

"So it looks like I'm stuck inside for the day then, any more musty old scrolls you have lying about?"

"Not that have any relevance to what you are focusing on right now, no. But I don't think I'm going to let you do nothing all day today either."

"You're too cruel, you old lizard."

"So they say."

"Dare I ask who?" Ruki asked nervously

"Nothing that is currently alive to speak of it." Kaitheros stated, taking some bemusement from his Miko's plight.

"Yeah, don't think I want to know..." Ruki cringed

"In any case, I have decided what to educate you further on today."

"Oh what is it? Indoor Kendo? How to properly compose proper calligraphy? Flower Arranging?"

"All good ideas, but no, something that is more in vein with your eccentricities."

"Yokai?"

"No. Origami."

"Sarcasm is unbecoming of you, you old lizard."

"Anyways, how do you feel about serpents?"

"Depends. Vipers are assholes, but pythons are soo cute though! They just plop around and boop your with their cute puppy-like faces~"

Kaitheros was blank faced as he could get as and distracted as if he was arguing with something in his head.

"Why do ask, Thero-Kun?"

"Well, for today's Yokai, were are going to discuss one such serpent and its partner in crime, so to speak."

"Two-Yokai in one?"

"More like Three, one one is so similar to the other its hardly worth mentioning. The other two aren't the same species, but they do work together often."

"So what is this first one? Some sort of giant man-eating snake?"

"Your not wrong. It definitely is a snake, and it definetly has human beings as its preferred prey. But this one certainly doesn't look the part, at least glancing at the creature waist up."

"So like some sort of Japanese Lamia, I'm guessing."

"Now you are on the right track. Yes, what we shall discuss first is the Nure-Onna."

"That's an odd name for a snake-person." Ruki mused given that Nure-Onna meant "Wet Woman".

"It would seem so, until you see one up close and you realize it is dripping wet."

"Dripping wet? Does it live near the water?"

"The Ocean more specifically. Nure-Onna are a type of Ayakashi which haunt coasts and beaches. The same for their cohorts."

"So whats so special about the Nure-Onna?"

"Well, a Nure-Onna is like other Yokai in that they hunt using deception and ambushing their prey, which is where their upper body comes into play."

"What? Do they seduce men or something?"

"Not the Nure-Onna specifically, that is the calling card of their sister species, but more on them later. A Nure-Onna's hunting tactic is like some other Yokai, do you remember the Tsurube-Otoshi and how it can manipulate its weight?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, the Nure-Onna essentially has the same sort of weight manipulation as the Tsurube-Otoshi, albiet it uses it on objects, namely a bundle which resembles a bundled up human infant which it uses to lure its prey closer to it."

"I think I know where this is going---"

"A Nure-Onna often conceals the rest of its more serpentine body behind rocks, in the sand or in the water. And cry out for someone to help them, using their upper body and bundle to resemble a woman in distress. The bundle resembling a human infant, likewise attributes to this deception making it much more likely for passer-byes to come and assist despite the risk."

"That's pretty cruel, preying on human decency like that."

"That isn't the half of it. The Nure-Onna calls out asking for the stranger to hold her apparent 'infant'  so that she can rest. That is where the Nure-Onna's latent magic kicks in. Once the stranger has accepted the bundle, the bundle suddenly grows to be as heavy as a boulder in which case can pin the person by the objects weight or other nefarious means. With the victim incapacitated, the Nure-Onna proceeds to strike, coiling around the victim and then using its forked tongue to drain the victim of his or her blood."

"SO they are vampires too?! Sea-Snake Vampires?!"

"Essentially speaking. The Nure-Onna can also feed like a proper serpent by unhinging its jaws and swallowing the person whole, though that is rarely seen."

"So how do escape a Nure-Onna? I imagine you can just drop the rock and run away."

"That used to be the trick indeed. However, what the old stories failed to tell you is that in later years, the Nure-Onna have gotten more nefarious over time practicing a type of illusion magic by concealing another object as the bundle. So when someone took the bundle, they would find their arms glued to it by some sort of adhesive, or other Nure-Onna would use some sort of stone "stocks" which would clamp around a victims hands and the weight would cause them to drop the the ground, helpless."

"So in short, don't take the bundle then, else your doomed?"

"That is the gist of it."

"So how do I deal with these snakes then? Could I be able to see through their illusions with your sight?"

"Indeed you can. Nure-Onna illusions are incredibly weak, and begin to falter the closer you get. By the time a normal person sees the Nure-Onna's scales, reptilian lips and other distinctive features, it is often too late for them, as the Nure-Onna could still wrap its massive coils around them, denying escape.  However with you, you could be able to see through their mirage-like illusion from afar and see the snakes for what they really are, in addition their bundle would likely glow like the sun if you were to gaze upon it with my eyes pointing out their ruse from far away."

"So don't get close to the Nure-Onna then? What if they chase after you?"

"Nure-Onna are ambush predators and don't wish to expend much energy pursuing prey, besides you can easily outrun one. However...Nure-Onna are seldom alone."

"So the other two Yokai you mentioned then?"

"Yes. Nure-Onna are similar to another breed of aquatic vampire called an Iso-Onna, although the Iso-Onna looks entirely human, and uses outright seduction to lull in its prey, needless to say, those of the male gender...although they have lured women to their dooms as well, Iso-Onna are pretty indiscriminate."

"So if Iso-Onna don't coil or trap you, what do they do?"

"Well, Iso-Onna have immense strength which they use to drag you beneath the waves and entrap you with their incredibly long hair, where they also suck your blood."

"So how to deal with these then?"

"Iso-Onna are a bit more tricky than Nure-Onna, due to Iso-Onna being what I assume to be in all actuality, older Nure-Onna whose magic and illusions have gotten increasingly better  being able to disguise themselves as boulders on a beach. While most Iso-Onna resemble human women, some sightings report an Iso-Onna having a serpentine lower body like a Nure-Onna and have been sighted miles out at sea, being so large that they can sink ships."

"So much like the greek Scylla?"

"Similar, yes."
Kaitheros mused in regards to one of the Greek Monsters of Myth.

"So I assume you can use the same tricks to reveal an Iso-Onna as well?"

"Essentially, though its harder to discern due to the fact Iso-Onna can also shapeshift into boulders or other natural landforms, though all they can really muster is looking like humans and looking like boulders, hardly a proper Shape-shifter. Anyways, the same attributes of avoiding Nure-Onna also apply to Iso-Onna, avoid them entirely. If in need to exterminate them, do not go after them, whatever you do."

"Why?"

"Because an Iso-Onna or Nure-Onna may have another, more deadly and insidious Yokai hiding around. A Yokai they often lure poor hapless victims towards so it can that particular Yokai can end their lives quickly so that the two can feast of the remains together. So if YOU MUST eliminate a Nure-Onna, either lure out the Nure-Onna out into the open and attack it from afar, or lure out and eliminate its partner Yokai first, a fact that is easier said than done."

"What is this nasty partner in crime? Another giant Snake? An older brother?"

"More like a Ox or Spider... I speak of course of the Ushi-Oni."

I called mine Serpentina, and her species is "serpire" which is a portmanteau of serpent and vampire

No I wont hold your baby. Sorry~

Japan DOES got everything. The heavy rock thing is familiar to me, though. Don't monkey Yokai on occasion do something similar with rocks or statues? I feel I seen it before.
