Description pencil on 11x17 charcoal paper then colored in PS

I wanted to make a map that was like the ones you'd find in old fairy tale books from long ago.
I feel like I may have achieved it with this one. You will decide for yourself though.

The map shows the region where Tibon, a young woodsman from the Far Wood, journeys through the Lands of Trolnarm as he seeks to lift a curse that has plagued his homeland for many years and gets caught up in other adventures and ultimately learns lessons from the Sea, Stone, and the Sky. He learns that prejudice can get you killed if you're unwilling to see things in a new light [Trolls aren't always what you think they are]   and 'good people' can still be bad. Everything is not always what it appears to be.

I had a lot of fun making this map... well, mostly. The color was a problem for a bit.. it was going to be done as watercolor like Haldeshar, but I changed my mind.
Hope you enjoy it. Cheers, J

Other bits....

Such an adorable map. The blue roofs are a nice idea, funny to see how that little red heart stands out.
I also like the inscriptions, they make the map so unique. Are they completely handwritten or have you created your own font?

SirInkman In reply to Aeyolscaer [2016-10-08 15:20:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Wiebke
I was going to do a more red terracotta sort of roof, but then I was thinking about the heart and chose the blue.
Now that heart is the only piece of red.

The lettering is all just pencil drawn as I did the map.
I do a fair amount of hand drawn custom lettering on the side so it was not too much work to do.
In some ways it is easier than warping font text in PS into some of those positions.

This reminds me of the maps that were in the Chronicles of Narnia books. Great work! I love the quasi-isometric style.

Beautiful! And yes I'd say you achieved your goal quite well. When I look at it the only thing I can envision is this residing in a book. Just like the map that you'd see when you first open a fantasy book, and it would span the inside front cover and first page. Very well done!

Actually I was thinking of Hans Holbein the Younger, but Wolfgang is actually a better choice.

Ah, those mountains ... The clouds are wonderful too and the sketchiness of the linework with the pencil definitely anchors the map in a dreamscape.

I look forward to seeing that.
I've wanted to do a map like this for a while now.
I had a comm for a map for an author that sort of prompted me to do this one.
