Description
In the Carina system, about 8,000 lightyears from the blue diamond, planet Earth, a catastrophe was unfolding on astronomical scales. The brightest and most unstable star of all, Eta Carinae, was about to explode. A team of ten special girls stood on a nearby chunk of space debris plotting their course of action.

"What do you think, Eta Prime?" asked a beautiful young girl with flowing platinum blonde hair. This was their princess, Sailor Theta Carinae.

"I don't know if Eta and I can stop this from happening. You'd be best getting the people to a safe distance," the one called Eta Prime replied. She was tall and golden skinned with a flowing raven ponytail.

"Define 'safe distance," a young girl dressed in bright orange snapped.

"I can't answer that properly," Eta Prime said with a deep sadness in her slate gray eyes. Concerns clouded her mind as the worst case scenario played out in her head. She and her counterpart, Sailor Eta Carinae, could probably contain most of the blast. Their countering powers of nuclear fusion and fission could maybe save the Carina system, but if they failed people would need to be far away from the star.
Alarms had been blaring across the system for weeks warning of the impending disaster. Many of the asteroid based cities had been on evacuation paths since the first hints of iron in the star Eta Carinae A had been picked up.

A handful of young Carinites had even been sent to a far off system containing the planet Earth. Research suggested that it was not so different than their own planetary homes had been. The ships bound for Earth were called The Lifeboats. The last resort, the hope in a worst case scenario.

Eta Carinae reached out and grabbed Eta Carinae Prime's hand. It was reflexive. She had her back to their stars and was watching the last Lifeboat take off. In her heart she felt the fear of the people. She felt like they blamed her. After all, she was the personification of Eta Carinae A. Eta Prime squeezed her hand reassuringly. She smiled at Eta reassuringly.

"We can do this, Eta. We are their protectors and we will fulfill that duty even to our deaths," she said evenly.

Eta only nodded in response. The others planned for the evacuation over the next hour or so as the timer counted down. Eta felt heavy staring into her star. She could feel the slowing heartbeat of nuclear fusion as the star grew heavy with iron. It was suffering as it poured its life energy into the growing iron core. It was almost time.

Theta turned to Eta then, "How is it?"

The pain in Etas face must have been evident. Tears had begun to form in her eyes. Her own chest was tight, and she felt the star crying out to her. Maybe it was just her imagination, but in her head and heart it was crying out. The outbursts were manifested in massive flares flying off of the star's plasma surface.

"It's ready," she choked.

"Look at her," this time it was Alpha Carinae speaking. She pointed at Eta, "How is she going to help at all in this condition?"

Theta placed a gloved hand on Alpha's arm, "We have a duty to the people, and we must trust that Eta can do this."

Alpha scoffed, "When we all die I'll be sure to remember who's fool idea this was."

Beta stepped in front of Theta, "You need to respect your rulers, Alpha. You may be the General, but she is our Princess."

"ENOUGH!!!" Cried Eta Prime, "We can fight when it's done!"

Eta fell to her knees. The air around her felt like it was burning her skin. Everything hurt. Everything burned. Eta looked up in time to see eight of the Carina Senshi flying away from her and Eta Prime, and then it happened.

The explosion itself was agonizing. Eta felt like her body was flipping inside out as the massive Eta Carinae A star ejected its layers into space. Eta Prime stood still working as fast as she could to diffuse the nuclear bomb mid-explosion. Eta, herself, couldn't do much. She didn't realize that by resisting the urge to give in to the star's pressure she was doing her own part in keeping the explosion contained.
The star heaved against her will, but she wouldn't move. It threatened to split her apart, but she held it together. Eta Prime focused on containing the shockwaves and keeping the star in its original size confines. Beneath the surface, the layers of elements writhed and splashed against Eta's push. The gravity of the star tried to crash it down into itself, but Eta refused to die that way.

Finally, it was over, Eta collapsed on the ground and breathed out heavily. Eta Prime ran to her side, "You did wonderfully!" She cried pulling Eta into her lap and stroking her hair. Eta didn't move.

Eta Prime desperately felt for Eta's pulse, but there was none. The Ruby Crystal in Eta's shoulder cuff was shattered and gray. Slow realization came to Eta Prime that Eta was gone. "No," she whispered softly.

Eta Prime shoved what was left of her own power through Eta's body, trying to heal it at the atomic level. She kept at it until she felt Eta's heartbeat against her chest, but that was too much for her. In a final act of desperation, she pushed the life from her star seed into the shattered remains of Eta's crystal, and she faded away with it.

-Weeks later-

Eta awoke to see her star out of a window. It was ugly and spewing a cloud of dusty particulate out of its poles. She turned her gaze to the room around her. Theta Carinae was there, with a concerned look on her face.

"Where is Eta Prime?" Eta demanded hoarsely.

Theta looked down at her feet.

"Where is she, Theta?" Eta persisted.

"Eta Prime.... didn't make it..." Said Theta shakily.

Eta felt the rage rise up inside of her chest, "You! You let her die! You should have stayed, you should have helped! You could have saved her!"

Tears were streaming down Theta's cheeks as she looked at Eta with gentile eyes. "Eta Prime gave her life to you."

Eta stood and stormed off. She felt hatred towards the other Carina members blazing like the supernova inside of herself. This was their fault. She got into a small ship and took off. She was going to find somewhere else to call home away from Carina. She could never stop being Sailor Eta Carinae, but she didn't have to serve them.

Eta floated in space for weeks... months....

Months turned into years....

She let sleep take hold....

She let the darkness pull her down....

Suddenly she woke up. She was in a dark molecular cloud. What was this place? She looked out to see the corpse of a dead star. She steered her ship towards it.

Eta stepped out into the darkness and felt crushing gravity pull her in. She slipped into the dead star where she saw the most beautiful creature she could have ever imagined. He was a dragon. His skin was the color of the sky at night, and stars... There were stars in his skin. Bright aqua colored light raced along his muscle lines. What was this animal?

He looked like he was asleep. She gently touched him and he lit up her mind with memories of the galaxy... no.... the universe.... as it was being born. It was milky, then clear. It was electric. It was alive. Things came together. First stars, then black holes, then galaxies. They changed and moved and became the universe. She watched the replay of her star exploding. She watched Eta Prime give her life away and fade into nothing. She watched herself walk into the chamber with the sleeping dragon. She watched her place her hand on his skin.

This was Draco. This was the ancient force of destruction in the universe. The heart of the Draco constellation. He was old and powerful. He would help her take her vengeance.

He spoke in her mind, "You understand the price I demand?"

"I understand," she echoed. She opened herself up and let him flood into her mind and heart. They became one as two. One heart and mind in two bodies.

The Carina system prepared for the second great attack in less than an Earth year. Eta and Draco were upon the system like a flood of destruction. She unleashed massive nuclear attacks and he tore at the very fabric of space around them.

Theta called on her own greatest weapon, Sailor Omega Carinae. In times of great turmoil desperate measures had to be taken. If anyone could stand against Eta Carinae and her new pet Draco, it was Omega Carinae.

Omega headed Draco and Eta off. She stood between the duo and the precious nebula the Carinites held dear. Omega's crimson eyes were locked with Eta's. Omega let loose a massive energy beam at Eta. She turned Draco, but the light wave moved too quickly. It caught Draco's wings.

One of the wings was completely severed, the other was punctured clean through. He roared in agony, but was cut short by another wave coming at his face. Eta had linked her own life force with Draco's as payment for his help at the beginning. They floated helplessly in space bleeding out together.

Draco's thoughts came to Eta. A final ending to the story. Eta turned to her star and shoved its axis towards a different area of space. She pushed at it hard. It crashed into Eta Carinae B and lit up the sky. The explosion vaporized the Carina System. Eta ripped space around her star and everything imploded into it. Matter was condensed into a tiny area. Then the black hole thrashed and the gamma ray burst shot off into space.

This was it. Eta's moment of finality. The Carina system was gone, and her aim had been true. Soon the remaining Carinites would die as the gamma radiation tore through the delicate planet Earth. Eta smiled, accepted nothingness, and the universe faded to black.
