Description Part one of two pieces I did for my drawing major project. Here it is next to the other piece:

[link]

This is about my very real problem of getting to sleep at night. I lie in bed for hours, unable to turn my mind off, mentally vocalising anything and everything from hypothetical conversations to every song in the world in a continuous monologue of thought. Its very annoying haha

I don't call myself an insomniac because a) its partly self inflicted by drinking coffee at night and b) I have no trouble sleeping in if the day allows it. Its just stopping my head from whirring around a million miles a minute that's the problem.

With this piece I wanted to convey the feeling that silence can be heavy and deafening, if that makes sense. The quiter it is, the more you can hear yourself and all your unfinished thoughts. Before you've finished one sentence, your mind is on to the next.

I actively listened to Silverchair' If You Keep Losing Sleep for this, for obvious reasons lol, and I wanted to call it that but decided against it. All the little details and bleeps in that song came through in the top I think, as well as the flying spirals of sheep These lyrics:

If you keep losing sleep
over other lovers
If you keep losing me
Youre gonna be bored

You're a tombstone in the mud
Playing Twister in a bubble
Again

whilst being pretty much nonesense, are very accurate descriptions of the essence of sleeplessness. Playing Twister in a bubble - its hilarious, but it's so much like that!

Anyway, it's watercolour paper inked black and then chalk, pencil and liquid paper. I'm not actually bald, and that doesn't really look like me (the eyes and nose do apparently). Hope you like it!

The mediums were chalk, some white pencil (from memory) and splashes of liquid paper for the starry bits. But I would say mainly chalk

I know, it's so annoying. I actually really dont like watching the sun rise at all, with the exception of a few scenarios, because it makes me feel like the seediest dude that ever did live lol. Thankyou

Wow, awesome!!!
I always have trouble getting to sleep, my mind is just always so active with new ideas. I really love the grafiti in the background at the top
The only problem i have is with the preportions of the head. The actual profile of the front of the face is good, but the actual skull doesn't go back far enough. If you look at a human profile, the back of the head goes quite far back before curving around and joining the neck. Also jaws tend to not be one smooth curve, there is a slight bend. Appart from that it's a fantastic idea that was exicuted beautifully

Thanks so much for your feedback, I'll remember it all next time I knew about the skull and jaw, but just thought "screw it, I'll compensate with the top" haha. Thanks again!

Thanks very much How frustrating can it get! I find it also happens when I'm waiting for or anticipating something that's going to happen the next day lol, and so I make time crawl myself. Thanks for the fave!

those sheep totally kick but. i love th perspectiuves, that they're not just flying in a 2-d space, but rather a 3-d space. Nice use of negative colouring as well. ah i want your drawing talent!

Simanion In reply to sharkaholic [2007-06-18 10:52:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah I decided half way through that I was going to have the sheep flying in a 3D space, and so I had to remove a few that were too big lol. Lucky they were in chalk. Do you reckon it goes well as an interpretation of IYKLS? I practically had it on a loop on my mp3 player while I was doing it in class, and did alot of the lines to the music lol. It must've looked weird to anyone watching.

sharkaholic In reply to Simanion [2007-06-18 22:29:50 +0000 UTC]

lol not weird entertaining! yea i reckon it works, though it's probably a little dark for IYKLS the imagery is spot on, but i see IYKLS in full colour, it's too bouncy to be dark lol.

Simanion In reply to sharkaholic [2007-06-19 04:57:27 +0000 UTC]

really? cool. Thats strange, I see it in black, white and red - not that it has anything to do with the white stripes lol. Its probably because Im reminded so much of Russian military demonstartions through the drums and orchestra.

sharkaholic In reply to Simanion [2007-06-19 06:54:49 +0000 UTC]

hehe, that's the beauty of it all! we all experience music in different ways. i see music in colour and in shapes, and they move, and boy do they move! lol my mind turns into some weird abstract thing when i listen to music (tis dangerous when i'm driving,i'm like, move away purple squiggle! stop bouncing in my vision!....... i swear i'm not insane...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simanion In reply to sharkaholic [2007-06-19 07:32:26 +0000 UTC]

haha! funny if there actually were squiggles trying to kill you and you thought they were a product of your mind. I dont see abstract shapes so much as actual "things" that I imagine just fit the sound. And yes, very strange movements lol. The Horror With Eyeballs video was pretty much what i imagined, with the rotating vegetables and the slowly spiralling eyes and sheep in the dark (!)..and skeletons lol.

Usually psychedelic artists minds are like that constantly...thats why we have to get all the intricate details out on paper.

Haha, it kind of is! I was bad enough already though. Thanks so much! and for faving it too I couldnt decide whether or not to call it psychedelic or surreal..I decided that because of all the abstract stuff at the top it's more psychedelic. While I'm here (lol) can I add it to the club pleease?

Thanks! actually someone in my class mentioned using glow in the dark ink lol, that would have been fun. I had to take a picture withou the flash for it to look like this, otherwise it looks all reflecty and crap. Thanks for the fave!

I'm sitting here rather awestruck as I have the exact same problem, following the same exact catalysts and solutions. Just replace coffee with Mt. Dew.

With that, I empathize with how true this is. Well done indeed.
